Can not change file permissions MAC+PC. Reset them?

Hi,

I moved from PC to an old Mac and then a newer iMac so there was some time delay while getting my TeraStation 4TB "organized".

I now have some files and folders which I can not access even if I log in as admin. The groups seem ok. When I view the files

from PC I have the same problem but I see less detail. I tried to chmod/chown/chflgs/ets with Mac and probably made things worse ;-(

I also have a 6TB with some similar problems.

I saw some threads on web that suggest logging in as root but that seemed complicated and risky.

Is there a way/tool to zap all permissions to "standard"? I hoped the PC Navi tool would do that but does not seem so.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

What is the model number of your TeraStation? I would do a restore through the interface do reset the permisions.

Hi,

thanks for getting back to me. Here you go:

TS-H4.0TGL/R5

TS-H6.0TGL/R5

all updated to 1.35 Firmware yesterday

Thanks !

PS a friend with a Tera suggested turning off Apple in Shared Folder Support: Y=Windows Y=Apple N=FTP N=Diskbackup

then on again. What would that do? That would be interesting to know.

PPS my permissions "seem" ok.

Admin is Group RW

Users admin MYFULLNAME (for Mac) and user1 (for PC) are RW

I know the problem is that I created some subdir on PC with a user, some on Mac with my name and sometimes

I was mounted as admin ... so there is a mixmash of creators. Yet it is useful to sometimes create a subdir from

various machines. That's why I got a NAS

PPPS I also had turned off Access Restrictions ie. Disable ... but that made do difference. I then Enabled again.

What does that action do? Again interested. Had hoped that would "magically" reset all permissions once disabled.

-Go into the Web Interface

-Click on "Maintenance"

-Click "Initialize"

-Click "Restore Defaults"

This will reset the settings on the unit without harming any data.

Hi,

thanks for your simple instructions. Was excited to try. All went well but I can still not delete some files/subdirs.

I did it a second time and made sure File Permissions were disabled ... and still can't delete.

The files properties look better when I go a Get Info and shows Read/Write (previously it was custom) but still can not delete.

I also tried from a PC running XP with no success.

It seems the Restore went quite fast ... did the Tera really run through all files and set EVERY permission?

Do you have any other jokers up your sleeve? Is there a "root"? A utility? I feel we are close ...

Thanks for helping !

You could try what I call a hard restore which is using the firmware update program with the force update options enabled and also the delete user config option checked. If this force firmware update with the delete user config option fails to fix the issue then the unit unfortunately would have to be formatted.

HI,

thanks for your latest advice. Sorry for the delay. Wanted the weekend so I can concentrate ;-)

I had updated the firmware quite recently. I just redownloaded the took and it scans and does not detect any Teras needing firmware update. I checked the menus but could not see how I could "forcefully" load a firmware image. Did I miss something. What do you suggest?

I have 4 + 6 TB both quite full and reformatting both will be a pain as I need to find "spare" 6TB. Since I'm RAID5 I guess I need 3 + 4 TB ... maybe buy a BUFFALO DriveStation Duo HD-WL 4TB? 2x Copy over+format+copy back. Then 4TB for future backups. Good plan?

Kind regards,

H

You can find how to enable the debug settings and force udpate in the FAQ 2 of 5.

Hi,

thanks for reply and FAQ reference. Found it and it looks easy. I am in the process of copying everying to spare 1.5TB SATA drives.

Will reformat and start again. Will keep your tips as reference. Thanks for your numerous interventions.

Kind regards,

H.

I know this is late, but I've been dealing with this recently, and found a solution, at least for myself. Have had a Linkstation Duo for a few years, always used PC's, never an issue, recently added a Mac Mini to the mix and everything I try to access from a PC can only read, no write, so no cut, copy or delete. Thought I was ruined, and the support for this issue is pretty sparse. Then I found an application for the Mac called "BatCHmod". Installed it on the Mac, opened, selected the target which would be the Linkstation, and chose read and write for all three users displayed. It took some time for the linkstation to write these changes, I have about 750 GB in raid 1, but once it was done, everything is back to normal, no formatting, disaster averted. Now looking at the website for the BatCHmod, it looks like it only works, right now, on the intel based Macs. Hope this helps.
