I have just stumbled into a problem with my hard drive that i hadnt realized since ive had it. All I usually do is store things into the hard drive and ive rarely had any problems. That has changed today when i went to retrieve several files FROM the external hard drive and it froze. This has caught me by surprise. All ive ever done wast COPY TO the hard drive, never FROM it.

What is going on? I dont think its a bad sector because i copied a 500MB file into the hard drive, and once it was finished i tried moving it back into my internal hard drive and it froze.

All help is welcomed. Thanks in advanced.

ive tried this on my PC and Laptop (and also with a different USB cable) It behaves the same way on both. I can copy things to its perfectly but copying from it or within it is slow and sometimes comes to a halt.

If i copy a video file into Buffalo, i can watch it and it plays pretty smoothly.

I also cant seem to take a file within buffalo, and copy it to a different folder within buffalo. like i said it never gets up to speed and usually comes to a halt. thanks.

Isn't formatting the last resort. I have a ton of data stored there and no they aren't backed up. I thought they were the back up and now I realize the foolishness of that thought.

On the positive side I made an adjustment and switched the setting of the drive from being optimized for performance to the easy removal setting. Its ironic, but this has vastly improved my situation. I'm getting speeds of up to 30mb/s although I still get abrupt stops it picks up speed again much quicker than last time. I'm slowly moving files out of it while I have it working but it's weird that it improved when I disabled the performance setting. Any ideas why?

would changing the enclosure itself help with this problem or is it disk specific?

if i wanted to change enclosures. what kind do i need to get for my specific buffalo hard drive?
