Problems recognizing a mini hard drive plugged into USB port on Terastation

I plugged my mini Seagate hard drive (from my laptop) into the USB port on my Terstation, which is connected my home network system. It just didn't recognize it as a drive. However when I plug the Seagate back into my laptop, it says it needs to be formatted. Anyone got any ideas what happened?
