I have see a couple posts about slow nas drives, but nothing for the LS-X3.OTL.

I will try a direct connection between my desktop and the device but have to wait probably another day before the process I started yesterday completes (normally completes in 6 hours but now only half complete after 24 hours).

Everytime i try to get a listing on the drive, from File Explorer, it takes minutes to get the data back.  This is my first NAS drive but have had luck with Buffalo before so .. hoping someone here has some ideas.

Desktop, Win7 64, current, 8 gig memory, direct connect to router.  Internet access up/down quick

Laptop, Win64, current, 12 gig, wireless, internet access up/down quick.  Also mapping drive to Desktop's external drive is very quick.

Router: Netgear WNDR3400v2, current patches.

NAS Box: Buffalo LS-X3.OTL  Firmware: 1.62   Note: I have tried to search on this site to see if there is any update info for the box but the download section says there is no information about the LS-X3.OTL.

Like I said I am hoping for some good feedback on what I can try as I am just about at wits end.

Thanks

So, I stopped the process that was running because I just couldn't wait any longer to try and find out what was causing the buffalo nas box to be so slow.

1) shutdown the nas & disconnected from router

2) shutdown desktop & disconnected from router

3) connected NAS directly to computer & booted both.  Fixed network settings on desktop to talk to NAS.  I used a new network cable for the connection

4) I created a new folder on the desktop and then 'browsed' the NAS from navigator.  Selected approx 2.5 gig of folders/files and Copy/Paste to new folder on desktop.  During the copy process it reached a speed of 2.8m.  That *seems* slow for a direct connection like that.

5) in Navigator2 I Right-Click the device and select 'Open Web settings'.  The browser opens to 192.168.1.15 and then the page just spins and spins.  Approx 2.5-3 minutes pass.  By the way since I plugged the NAS back in (power) it has been busy ... like an old time coffie purcolator.

Eventually I can log in.  But everything I enter/click seems to take 1-3 minutes to complete.  The page may change after 30-60 sec but it is not available for another length of time.

So I decide since i was getting 2.8 in copy (boy that is slow) I reconnected the NAS to the network.

1) power down the NAS

2) power down the desktop.  Disconnect the NAS and reconnect desktop to network

3) power down the router

4) reconnect the NAS to the router

5) power up the Router

6) power up the NAS

7) power up the desktop.  reset the settings for the desktop to work correctly with the network

8) start up Navigator2.  It finds the NAS

9) right-click NAS and 'Open Web Settings'.  After 3+ minutes it asks for login.  Enter and click.  I am still waiting for it to get to the first page.  Been 6 minutes.

While I am waiting I thought I would try the copy test again.

1) Click Browse in Navigator2.  File Explorer comes up in a few seconds and has 'Info' and 'share'.

2) D-Click on Share.  After a few seconds the list of directories comes up.  There are 8.

3) D-Click on 'My Music 1-H'.  It takes 54 seconds for it to list the 2944 folders in that directory.

4) Select the same items (15 folders) i selected in the test above Copy/Paste.  I am again getting 2.8.  This is much better than I was getting before but still seems slow.

So the 'direct' access is almost okay.  Still pretty slow but ...

But the connection to the web pages simply are not acceptable.

Thoughts on how all this can be improved?

Thanks

So no one else finds this slow?  Shouldn't it be as fast as a mapped drive to another computer?

Igbar

I did post a report on Buffalo support yesterday and got a reply last night.

They suggested doing a firmware update and possibly changing frame sizes.

I had the firmware and hadn't noticed a difference BUT I shut down the NAS again and recycled power.

I am now getting 10+mb on copy down to load drive and can now use webaccess.  Also I can connect with the android app with playing music with the app working well.

So the solutions are:

1) do the firmware update.  This goes without saying.

2) IF you are still having speed problems try shutting down the NAS box.  Then cycle the power.

IF at this point you haven't increased in speed ... get a hold of Buffalo Tech support.  at least their 'official' support is pretty quick.
