Japanese web admin - NO LINKS ON LEFT SIDE?

Hello All,

Recently replaced both hard drives in my LS-W1.0TGL/RI Linkstation. It came up dead, and so, with the help of this board, I figured out the TFTP boot recovery, and after lots of trial and error, I was able to format my linkstation, and update my firmware to 1.09

All apears to be working, but now the web admin pages come up in JAPANESE. I have searched this board for two days, and found lots of people saying the following:

Try following these steps to change the device back to English:

1. Connect to the web configuration utility by entering the TeraStation's IP address in a web browser.
2. In the column of blue items on the left hand side, select the second link.
3. Under the first header are two text fields; enter or modify the text in the second.
4. Under the third header, the first entry is a radio selection with two options; select the one on the right.
5. Under the fourth header (with two menu/pulldown boxes beneath it), set both menu boxes to the second entry in the list (the second menu box should say cp437).
6. Click the button, and close and reopen the browser.
I cannot get past the second step(in red above) because there are not any links in the left hand side?  I tried to load this page with Internet Explorer, as well as google chrome. Both browsers do not show links here?
Also, in the "INFO" folder on the linkStation, there is only one folder named Japanese. There is no other folders at all. I would expect to see a folder named "English" but there is nothing there at all.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Michael

Are there any type of links on the left hand side?  If there are 3 you are logged in as a guest.  If there are none, sounds like there is a firmware issue and the most recent FW will need to be forced onto the unit via http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/FAQ-2-of-5-Force-Firmware-update-procedure-please-read-this/td-p/11011" target="_self" rel="nofollow">this route

Hello

Thanks for writing back.

I had no links, at all, Nothing, in the left hand side of the web admin login page.

I tried the instructions in the link you provided.

Every thing seemed to go real smooth. The firmware was loaded, and I heard the linkstation reboot.

The software reported it was waiting on the linkstation to reboot.

It waited the 480 seconds, and then said there was no response from the linkstation

I let it wait another 480 seconds, still no response.

Now nothing is wroking, the link station only has the bottom green light, shaped like two arrows, flickering. There are no other lights, and the fan is running very slow.

Holding the reset button has no effect, no matter how long I hold it. Even holding it down, while plugging in the linkstation has no effect.

The TFTP boot proceedure has no effect now either.  I can't get the station to talk at all.

Is the link station dead now? Do you have ny other ideas I could try?

Michael

As I mentioned before:

"Holding the reset button has no effect, no matter how long I hold it. Even holding it down, while plugging in the linkstation has no effect."

Holding it down while plugging it in, should bring up EM mode, and it did yesterday, prior to doing the force upgrade suggestion in the second post.

Currently,

I never see the top blue or green light. It never comes on anymore, for anything/reason.

I never see the center red " i "  any more, it is not blinking any codes. It is just off.

I only see the bottom, green arrows, they seem to flicker when there is network traffic, and remain constant when there is no traffic.

The fan doesn't come on fast, and then slow down, but rather,  the fan is just on, slow, all the time.

I have hooked it to my lap top, directly. Set the laptop to 192.168.11.1 and ran the TFTP program. It says it is accepting responses, but nothing ever happens. Even trying to reboot the linkstation in this mode, and holding the button for EM mode, still I cannot connect to the link station.

Is there any home for this thing? Is there a battery inside I could pull out, to clear memory, and try again?  Or is it just a really big door stop now?

Is the unit a USA unit?  The problems present can result if the unit was from a different region.  From the model number you provided I was taking into account that this is a US product.  From the issues described I would try a EM mode boot once more, but if the power light does not display sounds like the flash ROM may be having problems.  But please try an EM boot once more to verify that the unit cannot be restored to factory settings

Hello,

Yes, I bought the unit from FRY's electronics, in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is about two years old now.

I left the unit unplugged for over 24 hours. Then I held the button on the back, and plugged in the power cord again.

Same thing. Only light on the unit is the bottom green light that looks like two arrows. This light is steady green now, but when I have the network plugged into it, the arrows flicker with traffic.

Other than that, this is no signs of life.

If there is no signs of life, the power light specifically, it does sound like the unit has become damaged in some fashion that is not recoverable.  If the unit cannot be found on the network, and if it cannot be found while directly connected to a PC/MAC with DHCP and/or a static IP address there is no way to even communicate with the unit there is nothing that can be done.

did you try putting the two original hard drives back in to see if that works (since that was probably the last time the unit worked fully) - it could be that the new HDDs are sucking too much power from the logic board (or have already damaged the logic board by sucking too much power)
