TeraStation Transfer Speeds

I have a TeraStation Model No. HD-H20TGL/R5 (with 2 TB of storage) running firmware version 1.12. My problem is that the TeraStation's transfer speeds fluctuate without warning, always getting slower. When first purchased, I could stream movies off of it with no problems. Now, I can barely even play an mp3 off of it without constant glitching from slow transfer speeds. One time I reset all of the network switches, which helped for a while. Another time I replaced the network cable, which again helped, but only temporarily. It is now slow once more, but neither of those solutions is working. I plan a firmware upgrade soon, but will this solve my problem? Anyone have a solution?

Thanks

I have now upgraded to firmware version 2.16, and still the problem is not solved. Anyone have any advice?

Set the unit back to factory defaults (this will not cause any data loss), this should be done from the web interface.  Also you can try to adjust the packet sizes in the network settings of the unit.

I have noticed this when trying to copy from the TS to my iMac (OS X 10.6.4) but not from the TS to my Windows PC running Windows 7 Ultimate. Both are Core 2 Duo processors with atleast 4GB RAM.

I too tried setting the frame size to 4,XXX in the web server. I am also running RAID 10 on the TS.

It has progressivly gotten worse as time went on. Currently there is over 600GB of data on the drive. I have also noticed lag in streaming to my Windows machine.

FYI all devices are plugged into the same GB switch and are using CAT 5e and CAT 6 cabling.

I believe what eventually solved my problem was a replacement of the network switch to which the the TeraStation was attached. Apparently the switch (or was it a router; I am never certain) will degrade over time and thus the speed issues. Another problem I've had was the network cable that came with the unit. It too seems to have degraded over time, and when it was replaced speeds improved. Neither of these are too terribly surprising, as I was streaming videos off of the unit on a regular basis at the time (lots of network traffic).

Hope that helps!

Most people think bigger is better to squeeze performance out of these devices.  Generally, this isn't the case with frame sizes.  Too large of a frame size will cause the device to respond (via the GUI) and transfer data slower in low traffic environs.  Hope this gives a point in the right direction for you.
