We have just acquired a LS-CHL (1TB) and wish to hook it up to our local DOMAIN. The idea is to "import" users from our local domain (creating LS "external users"?...) so that we can set up storage space that is restricted (protected) for specific members of our network domain. According to the manual, this is something that is possible, but the PDF makes reference to an option that is unavailable in the web management pages...

 

We've tried upgrading to the latest firmware and we've tried to read through this forum, but no luck... No progress whatsoever. Can someone kindly point us in the right direction?

You cannot join an LS-CHL to an AD domain to import users and groups. You would need an LS-XHL.

Thank you for the reply. It explains the situation.

 

However, this is rather annoying... The comparison chart on the Buffalo website lists as the only difference between the two models a rather mysteriously called "High Performance Architecture" defined as "High speed CPU and RAM provide faster network performance". In addition, the manual itself makes no distinction between the features that are available in one and not the other model... All in all, it looks to me as if Buffalo is selling an incorrectly advertised product.

 

Does anyone know whether this forum is actively read by anyone officially belonging to Buffalo?

You haven't mentioned if you have a V1 or V2 of the LS-CHL, or what revision of Firmware. Please elaborate.

I'm not sure about the V1/V2 issue. At the bottom, a label simply states

MODEL: LS-CHL Series

this may mean that it's a first generation machine, but I'm not sure. There's also a serial number -- should I post that here also?

 

Still on the issue of V1/V2, when accessing the machine through a browser, the "System Information" section (left column) has "LS-CHL-V2A15" as the default "Name", so that could make it a V2... :-)  If you point me in the right direction I'll look further.

 

As for the firmware, it has been updated to the latest available version on the website: 1.31

 

Perhaps I should also add that it's not actially an AD domain that we have; it's an NT domain... I'm not sure whether this makes a difference, but this certainly doesn't change the fundamental issue of the manual making reference to features that are unavailable (invisible / not present) when the NAS is accessed through a browser for configuration...

 

All help, suggestion, etc, is greatly appreciated.

So far as I remember the import of users was never a feature of NT domain membership. You can put it in a NT domain and add the users manually.  This is because an NT4 server does not really have global users/groups and it is managed in a different way.

From the manual (just one example, but there are more, where NT domains are mentioned) :

"Depending on your network type, you may choose to authenticate in Workgroup or NT Domain mode."

 

The idea, in fact, is to import users (and, if possible their groups) from the PDC (making them "external users" in the NAS?), so that the domain users can have "personal" folders set up for storage...
