Files Corrupting on TeraStation Pro

Hi:

 

 

 

First time posting on this forum.

 

I have a TeraStation Pro TS-HTGL/R5 F/W 1.33 on a network with 22 computer connecting.  One win 2003 server with 5 users and the rest are xp/win7 machines on a workgroup.

 

The TeraStation is about 2 months old and till now has been working fine.

 

Now I have a few problems.

 

1.   On one on the machine using the server the user runs Crystal Reports. If she has the file on her local machine it will open up fine. When she puts the file on the TeraStation and trys to open she gets an error stating it is the wrong file type or corrupt.

 

2.   On one of the workgroup machines the user is running Office 2007.  If he saves an excel file on the TeraStation and then trys to open it he get an error stating it is the wrong file type or corrupt.  If we move it local the file is still corrupted.

 

 

 

The TeraStation is connected to a Netgear gigabit 24 port managed switch.

 

I need help resolving this.

Put simply the ability to save files simply by writing the data to the disk has become more complicated than it used to be.  Most applications that save data will use an API and "instruct how the file should be written".  Since this device utilizes a Samba kernel it would be much along the same lines as trying to have MS Word instruct Linux using APIs to save a file to hard disk.  Linux cannot understand these commands and these NAS devices cannot be "reworked" to be able to accept MS API file instruction.  The long and short of it is these devices cannot have the data saved directly to them, you will need to save the file locally (on a workstation) and then transfer it to the NAS.

I've been having a few problems with one of my TeraStation III . Every month or so, one of my users will say that they can not save a file that they were in the middle of editing. Sometimes MS Word, other times, Excel.

But once they get the message, the file on the NAS is either missing entirely or there, with KB , but the app will report file corrupt or not in correct format when trying to open.

 

My heart sank when I read your post about the API and Samba. Is this really the case?

If so, why only every now and again? I have a lot of users writing directly to the NAS.

All of our files are stored there.

 

Anyone else seeing this "intermittant" problem?

We first started seeing issues like this about a year and a half ago with users who were using AutoCAD (computer aided drafting software to the uninitiated) and they would directly save their work to the NAS.  When the saved file was accessed either the data was corrupt, incomplete or completely unusable in some cases and caused us a lot of grief.  That was some of our first encounters with APIs it would seem as CAD software was and still is very sophisticated.  To further this, recent versions of Office (i.e. 2007) utilize APIs as well with the writing of data.  There is no workaround available from us as of yet to include a solution to this problem.  However, we are working and testing solutions and possible workarounds as often as we can to alleviate this situation but there is no quick answer available as of yet.  Otherwise, my explanation would have been shorter :robotvery-happy:
