I just bought a Buffalo portable hard drive and it is not connecting to my laptop. The work Buffalo lights up white, no other lights appear on the hard drive.

In Computer Management under Disk Drives - BUFFALO HD-PEU2 USB device appears. When I go into Properties and then under the tab Volumes the Status is Unreadable, Partition Style is Not Applicable

I have not installed any software in relation to this product, no software came in the box.

Make: MiniStation Lite Portable USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Model: HD-PE500U2

Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional - Service pack 3

Is there any way to get this working or should i take it back to where i bought it?

If you right click on that partition is there the option of "New Simple Volume"?
