I tried doing a quick format from Widows Disk Management, but once complete (~30 mins) it was still using FAT

Then I tried formatting the drive by right clicking it from windows explorer and not doing quick format.  After two hours the progress bar of the format dialog had not moved, so I quit the format.

Windows Disk Management doesn't seem to recognise the drive now.

So I thought I would reformat for FAT32 and then try convert x: fs:NTFS

So I'm trying to get back to FAT32, using the disk formatter that comes with the buffalo disk.

It said I had to initialize the disk, so I did that. But then it didn't let me format the disk, so I chose to do a Physical Format.  This has now been running for 603 minutes (10 hours).. I have to stop it soon as I need to go to work.

Any one got any suggestions?

Thanks

Martin

It seems as there is a problem with the disk itself, windows disk manager may not recognize it but what about the USB host controllers, are they recognizing that there is a unit attached?  If it does not even notice it there the only other option is to try it on another computer.  If that still fails I would suggest taking it back to the place of purchase (if still within policy) or contacting tech support for an RMA

Hi,

If I plug the drive in, windows says in order to use the drive I need to format it.  Do you want to format it? Format disk or cancel

buffalo disk formatter recognises the disk, and after a long delay shows me a partition which it says is fat16.  if i select the partition (aqua blue in colour) it doesn't enable the format button.  Another time, after selecting the drive in the drop down and hitting refresh button ,after ~5 mins it comes up with this message:

This drive is not initialized for DOS/V

This drive must be initalized in order to create a DOS/V partiion

Do you wish to initialize this drive? (Yes/No)

Using Windows Computer Management > Disk Management, it gets stuck loading disk configuration.
