Nas drive replacement issue

I purchased a replacement drive for my TS5800D.
I received the drive and installed it.
I did not power down. I removed the drive like I was supposed to and inserted the new drive.
There was no indication that it started rebuilding. I waited for a few minutes and there was still nothing.
When nothing seemed to be happening, I held down the function key for three seconds as the directions said and it was supposed to beep. I did not get a beep.

I have replaced hard drives in this NAS before, and it would start rebuilding on its own as soon as I put the new drive in.
Is there anything else I can try?
Did I get a faulty new drive if so, how would I know?
Should I still have gotten the beep after I pressed the function key?

aaaaand we're back. a lot of times, you'll need to clear any 'tool' partitions the drive manufacturer puts on them. Go to the UI and see if the drive is recognized and if it's the right size. If its a super tiny bit smaller than it has to be, that's a sure sign. Then you do this. https://buffaloamericas.com/knowledge-base/KB1118

**A single copy of data, even on a RAID array, is NOT a backup! Hard drive failure is not a question of IF, but WHEN! Don't take my word for it, take Google's!**
