Ext. HD made noise and disappeared

i've had the ext. hd for 2 years and worked fine. this morning it made a scraping, grinding sound and no longer appears in my computer list. took apart, cleaned. uninstalled and reinstalled and still nothing. cannot access it to check for errors. device mgr lists it as 'mass storage device' where i 'think' it used to actually say 'buffalo'. any ideas/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. ALL of my data is stored there.

forgot to add i'm running it on a sony vaio destop, windows vista. but it also didn't show up when i plugged it into my mac. it is a buffalo drive station, model#HD-HB-250u2. hopefully the additional info will get me some type of reply!!!
