HDD Spindown - LS-CH500L

I am installing an LS-CH500L drive, with Firmware version 1.10, for music storage in a networked (Sonos) digital music system.  Since the drive will frequently not be accessed for hours and days at a time, the idea that it would spindown and back up automatically is very appealing. 

 

Although I find no mention of it in the user manual, there is a setting in System > Power Management to enable "HDD spindown".  Is this sufficient to allow the drive to spindown automatically?  If so, what are the parameters, for idle time before spindown, say, and time to spinup on demand?  Should I be able to notice any difference, in running noise for example, when the drive spins down? 

 

By the way, the web interface "read manual" button takes me to a terastation manual, but a separate visit to the buffalotech site turned up the linkstation live manual, which does not mention Power Management in the Settings area.

There is an auto switch on the back of the device, and how that works is that it looks for a reply from the nas navigator program.  So if the device is left on auto mode, then you pull up the nas navigator program the device should come back up.

That's it?  The "HDD Spindown" setting adds nothing to the function of the mechanical switch on the back of the unit?  Or is it an intentional redundancy, and both the external and internal "switches" must be set?  I've used a number of these units, and never came across the Web Admin Tool setting before -- of course, there are no doubt many obvious facts that I have yet to discover . . . but, is that all there is to it?
