Setting up Users for Shared Permissions

Dear All,

 

I have just installed a LS-WXL running v1.22 firmware onto my network. I currently have 25 people using the network and I want to give each of them separate shared folders for network space suitable for backup or storage.  The network is very simple network with no domain server just every pc in a workgroup.

 

Unfortunately setting up users based on every person's windows login is really not ideal as some people have spaces between their names or no windows password at all. The Buffalo user manual suggests this is the only way to do it?!

I was wondering whether it is possible to have a login to a shared folder which is a manually generated username and password (ie a login different to the windows one) which windows can just remember and use to log in to the correct shared folder?

 

Grateful for any assistance, I have checked the forum but I couldnt see a similar query, appologies if so.

You should have no problem creating a new shared folder for each user.  Then creating there own username (can be whatever)  and there own password with no special characters.  Also if you are playing on using this thing for a file server I would hope you could use this as a backup target from the pc's and not as a file server, as it will probably not be able to handle a heavy load from 25 users.

I realised that the reason I was confused was because I had mapped a shard folder with no permissions first and so the windows defaulted to a anonymous password. When I mapped the restricted folder first then the open folder second there was no problem.
