I attached external USB drive to my TS-III. I am able to select folders to backup in backup options and backups are running fine.

Since the manual is very incomplete, I have a couple of questions:

1. What does "Complete backup" -checkbox do?

2. Is it possible to backup all the files in a single selection or is it really necessity to individually select all folders one by one?

3. How can I restore files from by usb-backupdisk back to main harddisk (Array) if I lose some files?

More info..

2. It is exceedingly slow to add directories to backup list. it loads this source / target dropdown-list really long time. Does this have any easier way?

3. I realized that the usb disk can be mounted and use it like other shares. But I still dont know how to restore files after disk failure or human error (if someone deletes all files). Do I really have to move files over network? It cant be so.

Please give me some answers!

  1. Complete backup when checked will perform a complete backup from the TS to your destination.  Regardless of timestamps, modifications, etc. the files on the destination will be overwritten.
  2. When choosing which folders you want to backup, you can specify the root folder and all of its subfolders (ex. share) or you can specify one level down under the root folder and all of its subfolders (ex. share/music or share/movies) to prevent less important or constantly changing data from being backed up.
  3. The backup procedure from a usbdisk folder back to your TS would involve (I'll use share as an example again) opening usbdisk/share and copying the contents back to your TS in the corresponding directories.  As the backup protocols are not able to save a backup image or location log, manual restoration of the backup is necessary.  Please bear in mind when the USB HDD is hooked up the usbdisk folder will "follow" you within your folder structure on the TS, so when you want to copy data to the USB device you don't have to return to a root (or top level folder).
  4. Unfortunately, there's no other way to word this but the RSYNC software embedded into the NAS firmware is specifically written to utilize that method of folder selection. There are no workarounds for this process.
  5. Please see number 2 as this question is kind of a redundancy.

2. So there is no way to select all shares at one time. If there is like >50 shares it would take like hour to select them one by one (terastation web-interface is soo slow when it search source and destination folders again and again. And I think my session is going to end before it finds all folders and I have to login again :)

3. I know, but there is no tool to open usbdisk/share and copying the content back to TS! Or even better if I have to restore all 50 shares and 500GB. Do we really need to mount disks to external computer and move files over network? It would take looong time.
