Finally, remote access is working on my LS Mini. Thought I summarize my experience so that others won't stumble on my hurdles. Buffalo should come up with better tutorials/faq/manuals for people like me who are technically-challenged.

My environment is this:

PC running Win XP Home and Buffalo NAS Navigator installed.

AT&T dsl with Westell 237W modem and wireless router

LinkStation Mini 1TB

both PC and LS Mini use ethernet cable connect to router

(1)  Set up port fowarding in the modem. (I did this because it failed the uPnP test). It resides in the Gaming/NAT section for my modem. Setup a new service, with port 9000 forward to LinkStation.

(2) By default, the users created are "admin" and "guest". Folders "info" and "share" are created. Both folder's access restriction are disabled. Up to this point, anyone behind the router and install the NAS Navigator can gain access into "share".

(3) Use web admin to create a user, say "kevin" and password "12345", and create a group, say "home" and make kevin uder home group.

(4) Use web admin -> shared folders-> Share Folders Setup to enable access restriction to

"Allow all groups/users" and move group "Home" into Read/Write. Also move user "kevin" into "Read/Write".

(5) Use web admin and go to Web Access -> Folder Setup and click on share folder.  Set Web Access Setting to "Allow all group/user". This will inherit the group and user from the shared folder setup.

(6) and under Web Access -> Service Setup enable web Access, enable "Use BuffaloNAS.com" and choose NAS Name, say "BaldEagle", and Key say "12345". Disable Auto-Config Firewall and set external port to 9000.

(7) Now, in my local machines, when I click on "share", a login prompt show up, and I can gain access by user name "kevin" and password "12345". (I believe if I am using XP Pro, then I can store login info and perhaps skip this step). Once login, I have full access until I log-off.

(8) In the remote machine, use brower to navigate to "www.buffalonas.com/baldeagle" and login prompt should pop up. Type "kevin" for user name and "12345" for password and you should be able to see inside "share" now.

(9) If you set up a folder under web access, say "Public" and set access restriction to "Allow Anonymous" then anyone point to "www.buffalonas.com/baldeagle" will be able to see it. But on the upper left hand corner there will be "login" button which you can type in user name and password to get into "share".

I also found out that sometimes the setting doesn't take effect immedialtely. So I make the mistakes of going back and forth thinking things don't work. So wait a while before you test it out.

Hope this helps... CJ

This is correct, thank you cj6666...

Although with this configuration web access is NOT using folder permissions, this means that any user on the LS has access to this folder through web access.

If you want to use the restrictions that you set per folder, you want to set those restrictions before you setup web access.  Then in the folder setup for web access you will select "Inherit Folder Permissions" INSTEAD of "Allow all group/users".

I was glad to see this post, because I am trying to set up almost the same configuration.  I have a wired/wireless Belkin router connected to my Westell DSL modem (AT&T).  The LS and PC is hanging off the Belkin.  When I try to port forward on the Westell, it will not see the LS as it is not in the same subnet.  I tried changing the subnet of the Belkin to fall under the same as the Westell, but then I didn't have an Internet connection.  Any clue what I am missing?

You need to bridge your modem, and make sure there on the same subnet.  It almost sounds like you are double natting.
