HI

I have a HS-DH500GL and I connot connect to it, but it won't go in to emergency mode.

I have tried putting the plug while its on, as suggested on a few websites.

If I can't get it in emergency mode I can't firmware update

Can any body help.

You should be able to update the firmware without going into em mode.  If you are having an issue please include more detail.

Hi

When ever I try updating the the firmware, it says it's unable to find drive.

PCPiranha

Are you still getting a link light where it is plugged in?

Sorry I haven't been back. Yes I do still have the the link light showing.

I'm not sure if you are still struggling with this but if so then I suggest you make sure that you have followed the procedure below and checked it as I state:

As per the various Buffalo KnowledgeBase instructions:

- Power the unit down (and be sure to disconnect then reconnect the power).

- Power it on to reboot it.  If the power LED is still flashing more than 60 seconds from the first beep at power on, disconnect the power and retry.  Powering on does not normally set the device into EM of course, and hence the need to repeat this procedure.

- Repeat this, possibly several or many times, until the unit's power LED is constant 50 seconds after the beep (and the unit MAY BE in EM Mode).

- Next you must verify that it is truly in EM as below, for it may not be.

(Don't do anything other than this power cycling until you have exhausted the possibility of it working.)

Check that it really is in EM:

- Run NAS Navigator and let it find the device.  You say you cannot connect to it, and so to enable NAS Navigator to find it you need to fix that first.  To do that make a direct cable connection from your PC to the device.  NAS Navigator should now find it.

If not then you may need to go through the steps I set out later(*) (which you would be doing anyway if you intend to update the firmware, say)

- Verify that NAS Navigator records the device as being in "EM Mode".  That is, check that that text is shown as the status of the device in NAS Navigator.

- If NAS Navigator does not explicitly record it as being in "EM Mode" then repeat from the beginning again.

My experience of making the Linkstation enter EM:

My experience is of having to do this power cycling five or six times before it went into EM.  The Buffalo support staff and KnowledgeBase articles did not mention this verification step of seeing  "EM Mode" when I had problems a year back, and it caused weeks of confusion.  Once I had realized this it was just a matter of repeating the steps until my Linkstation Live HS-DH500GL properly went into EM, then all was well.

If none of this works then you may have to reset the unit and try from the beginning again.

Finally, you don't say why you wish to put the device into EM.  Tell us more and we may be able to help further.

(*) If NAS Navigator still cannot find the device when it is directly connected to your PC's NIC by an ethernet cable, you may have to follow some or all of these steps.  Try finding the device in NAS Navigator after each step.  Close and restart NAS Navigator each time to ensure it restarts its seek cycle.:

a) deactivate any antivirus and firewall software, including the Windows firewall, to ensure they are not blocking the connection

b) try disconnecting your PC from any network (LAN) it belongs to (the router of which would control the allocation of IP addresses across the LAN)

c) force the PC to have a static IP address that is compatible with the Linkstation device's default address.  To do that follow these steps (in Windows XP - Vista and Win7 will be somewhat different):
 - Control Panel-> Network Connection-> Right click the Local Area Connection

 - Select Internet protocol TCP/IP from the item list and double click it.
 - Select the option "use the following IP address" and type the number, (e.g.192.168.11.100),

   where that number be in the same IP range at  the linkstation's IP address;

For example if the device has not been reset or allocated a LAN IP address it may have its default .

This could be 169.254.213.188, in which case on the PC you might set 169.254.213.187.

You must have NAS Navigator working to be able to do the inspection of the device's IP address

   - so this step may be impossible if it still can't connect and you don't already know the address.
 - Then click OK and OK again. Close the Control Panel.
