RAID is not a replacement for a backup! Here's why.

Slow write and read speed

I use a Windows 7 machine to connect to a Linkstation Quad through a Netgear gigabit switch. I found that the write speed is only 10MB/s and the read speed is only 20MB/s.  I have enabled jumbo frame on both my PC and the Linkstation, and the Linkstation is in JBOD mode. Would appreciate any thought on the slow transfer speed.

P.S. At first I thought the switch is faulty, but after swapping in another brand new one, there is no improvement in transfer speed.

Also, if I have 1+ disks in the Quad, how do I turn them into a Raid 0 array?  They are now all in Standard Mode, and when I select Raid Setup, it only shows "Raid 1".

Thanks

You would need to backup your data, get into the web gui, delete the existing raid array (s) and create a new one as raid 0, you might get a little more speed out of the device.

Always flashing the firmware, or reflashing the firmware with a force and reinitilizing the device to factory defaults is another thing to try.

Also the amount of usage the device gets and how many users are accessing it would have a great deal to the speesd of the device.  It is designed as a backup target, not as a server, esp a linkstation quad where if a lot of users are accessing it and moving a lot of files back and forth it will slow it down greatly.

Thanks for the prompt response.  What is the normal read/write speed that I can expect to get from the Linkstation Quad on a gigabit network?  I am the sole user of the Quad.

Thanks

That is the maximum speed you can get and exactly what I get. The Quad does not have a fast processor so its not really suitable for anything other than as a backup destination for multiple PCs. Do note that until relatively recently, all Linux NAS from Buffalo or other vendors were about this speed. However, there are now newer NAS' that can do 70MB/s. Of course you have to pay more. Buffalo's new Terastation series is much faster than the Quad, but the old Terastations are just the same speed as the Quad.

I think you need to be careful when saying most vendors running Linux on NAS products are slow or the same transfer speeds as the Quad stations.  There are a few Linux NAS servers that can run rings around the Quad easily like my Synology NAS server.  However, these home servers are no match against commercial servers that are running at much faster xfer speeds!
