Moving disks from failed LS220D-EU to new LS220DE-EU

Hi.  This is my first post, so please be nice....

I have an LS220D that is stuck in EM, and even with my firewall & antivirus disabled, LSUpdater finds the unit but gets no response when trying to re-flash the firmware.  NAS Navigator 2 finds it OK, but reports it as being in emergency mode, and reports the same IP address as LSUpdater.

If I was to buy a new LS220DE, would I be able to just swap the disks (2x3TB WD Blue) from my LS220D (no E), and would it work OK?  This Thread https://forums.buffalotech.com/index.php?topic=25381.0 suggests that going from one DE to another DE works, would it be OK from the older D model as well?

Thanks in advance.

You can usually swap disks between devices of the same model, but that won't help with your problem.

If your device is booting into EM mode it typically means there is something wrong with the firmware on the disks, not with the device itself. This could be because the drives are starting to fail but could also just be filesystem corruption caused by a bad shutdown or firmware update.

If attempting to re-install the firmware with LSupdater didn't work you'll want to remove the drives and connect them to a PC and run diagnostics on them. If you have data on them that you need you can also try recovering it by connecting to a PC running Linux.

Once you've recovered any data you need you can do a fresh install of the firmware:

Thanks.  That would make sense - we had a series of power outages which could have caused the problem.  I'll recover the data & go from there.  Many thanks.

Just an update - After creating & booting a Linux Mint USB, I repaired & mounted one of the RAID 1 disks using mdadm & fsck (and an external USB dock), and recovered the data on to an NTFS USB drive.  I reinstalled the disks and the LS220D seemed to start up ok, reporting one of the disks as having failed.  I reconfigured it as a single disk, copied the data back on and voila!  One working LS220D.  I'm assuming having one failed disk and another with a mildly corrupted filesystem was making it fall in to Emergency Mode.

Now I have to save up for a pair of new WD Red disks to put in before the second (WD Green, not Blue as I said before) disk fails, but at least I know the chassis is OK.

I also now have a persistent-live Linux Mint USB to play with as well, which is a bonus.

Many thanks for your help.

Nice!

If you're comfortable with Linux you have the option to replace the stock formware on the device with a Linux install:
