Hi all,

I have purchased 2 LinkStation Pros (LS-XH1.0TL firmware 1.10).

LinkStation LSBACKUP I want to have in the office and LinkStation LSREPLICATE I want to have at home and use the Backup feature to backup LSBACKUP onto LSREPLICATE.

I have a few questions:

1) Under Off Subnet LinkStations, it says to enter an IP address.  Can I enter a domain name?

2) What ports do I have to open in the firewall to allow communication between the 2 LinkStation devices?

TIA!

To do this the destination linkstation needs a public IP address and ports 873 and 8873 must be open.  Then you will need to provide the IP, a DNS name wont work

Hi,

I have made some progress with this matter.

1) I realised that it will not take a DNS name (I wish it would)

2) I found http://www.buffalotech.com/knowledgebase/users/kb.php?id=10127&category_id=8&sid2" rel="nofollow">http://www.buffalotech.com/knowledgebase/users/kb.php?id=10127&category_id=8&sid2 and have added the necessary ports.

When I go to System -> Backup -> View NAS devices, and I add the IP to Off Subnet LinkStations. I can see the remote LinkStation show up perfectly (name and internal IP) under the Local LinkStations section.

Then I go to create a new backup task but the Backups Target list does not show the remote drive and its directories!

I tried both drives locally on the same network so I know I've got the directories setup.

Any suggestions??

PS I've got the HDD Spindown feature enabled.

RedRocket

I have disabled the HDD Spindown feature and no luck with the backup directories showing up..

So close but yet so far :smileymad:

It looks like your LS is not on a public IP.

RedRocket

What do you mean by public IP?

One device is at work and the other device is at my home. I am using the IP assigned to me by my ISP. All the necessary ports are open and I use an online port scanner (http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/port-scanner/" rel="nofollow">http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/port-scanner/) to verify this.

The destination Linkstation needs to have a direct connection to the internet, without a router. It needs to have a public IP address, meaning an IP address assigned from an internet provider.

RedRocket

I am using the IP from my internet provider and it is not working. I assume there is some routing going on in the background with my ADSL service.

Is there something in the firmware you can modify so that it works?

PCPiranha

I could forward up a feature request for you.

RedRocket

It would be great if you could put that feature request in.

I'm sure that it would help alot of people out because we can't control what our internet service providers do behind the scenes.
