I have a Buffalo HD-PX500U2 USB drive and recently installed Windows 7 on a  separate partition with XP on my Dell Dimension 8400.

When I try to boot up on Windows 7 with the USB drive connected, it freezes at the "Starting Windows" screen. I tried adjusting the boot order so it won't boot on the USB drive and also disabled the virtual cdrom USB device so the computer wouldn't try to boot from that. However, it's still freezing at the "Starting Windows" screen.

Make sure that you are using the ports on the back of the desktop.  Ill look into this in the meantime.

Also disable legacy usb support in the bios

Thanks for the response. Yes, the drive is plugged into the back of the computer.

Also, if I disable the legacy USB drivers in the BIOS will that affect XP when I boot into that system?

PCPiranha

No it shouldnt that only affects usb keyboards in bios and in MS-DOS

I found a solution:

On startup, hit F2 > System > Onboard Devices > USB Controller > Choose "No Boot"

Are there any adverse side effects from choosing "No Boot" for USB devices?
