I/O device error when using external USB drive

I am having problems when I am writing files to an external USB drive (HP Mybook) which is plugged into my TeraStation Pro. I can write files for a while then in the middle of copying files I get the error "The request could not be performed becasue of an I/O device error". I have reformatted the usb drive to make sure it was not a file system problem but I still get the same error.

If I power both the MyBook and TeraStation off and back on I can then resume copying files until the error comes back again.

Have you tried running a disk check on the USB drive through the Terrastation's interface? Also, do you know if this is happening through both the USB ports on the Terrastation? Finally, would it be possible to test this with another USB drive to narrow down if the TS or the USB drive could be causing the problem?
