TS5800D Supported Drives

Greetings,

I have a TS5800D that utilizes 8x3TB drives. The TS is about 5 years old now and has been as solid as a tank. As anything with age, drives have started to fail.  I have replaced 2 drives over the last 5 months.  The 3TB drives are starting to get to the point where the cost of the drives are a bit expensive.  The two I replaced I managed to find on sale for $67.00 a piece.  I am seeing them from anywhere from $90.00 to $120.00 each.

I managed to find a datasheet for the TS5800DN model but not the "D" model. https://www.buffalotech.com/products/terastation-5000n-series The data sheet states that the 5800DN can support:

24TB: TS5800DN2408 (8 x 3TB)
32TB: TS5800DN3208 (8 x 4TB)
48TB: TS5800DN4808 (8 x 8TB

My questions is, while the larger than 3TB drives may be a bit more expensive, will the TS I have support them?  Can I mix drives if they are in a separate array? i.e. I have 2 Arrays both 3+1 R5, delete the second array and remove drives and replace them with larger drives and create a new array. This way I can use the remaining 3 TB drives as replacements if necessary and upgrade the 1st array drives as necessary to reduce cost.

Any information would be great!

Thanks,

Jerry

yes, this unit will support those drives. If you add bigger drives to the existing array the unit will only use 3TB per drive, but you can certainly create a new array with bigger drives.

Keep in mind that the unit boots from the drives, so if you want to replace all of them with bigger drives you'll need to delete the existing array and replace one drive at a time and format each new drive. Once all drives are replaced then you can create a new array with the larger drives.

Thank you very much for the response.  I really appreciate it.  Thanks for reminding me that it uses all of the drives to boot from.

it doesn't use all the drives, but it does require at least one.
