Please help - trying to install LS-WVL/E on Windows 10

Hello - I'm at the end of my rope trying to get a new Buffalo LS-WVL/E to install.
The Nas Navigator2 software is installed and it can see the NAS on the network but it won't map the drive.
I can ping the drive and I've reinstalled the software multiple times.  I've reset the device with the function button and through the admin screen. I've tried to reinstall the firmware but the updated always says it cannot find a Linkstation that needs updating.  I've turned on and off the SMB 1.0 / CIFS File Sharing Support multiple times.

The manual just says to double click the drive icon to open the device but nothing happens.  When I ask it to map the network drive, I always get this screen:

I did create such a drive:

Here is the view of the drive from Nas Navigator2

Another post of someone who seemed to have the same issue, suggested visiting this page:

http://www.buffalotech.com/support-and-downloads/faqs/unable-to-map-a-share-by-hostname-in-windows

But that is a dead link!

I'm beginning to strongly suspect that no matter what , it will never work with Windows 10.  This Italian page seems to suggest it's not compatible?

http://www.buffalo-technology.com/it/assistenza/support/windows-10-compatibility/

But why would a brand new NAS not be compatible with Windows 10?  And why would the company not provide support for the latest windows OS?  That does not make any sense!

I tried contacting Buffalo support but they are refusing to answer any questions because I purchased this device over 90 days ago.  What a wonderful, helpful policy.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

First, that's not a brand new NAS. Buffalo hasn't made that model in several years. It might be "new old stock", meaning someone had it on the shelf for a long time but but Windows 7 was the newest version of Windows when that NAS was produced.

Second, I see that in NAS Navigator you have a yellow warning triangle on the device. What is the error it indicates? In other words, when you first click on the NAS it should pop up an error, what does it say?

The error indicated it could not find the second drive in the unit.  When I first tried to install it I put hard drives in both bays.  When I couldn't get it to work I removed the second drive to try to follow the instructions exactly as written.  When I went to re-read the instructions it said to only put the drive in bay 1 when installing the NAS.

Yes, I purchased the NAS over a year ago and it was on sale at the time meaning it may have been last years model or something that.  Still I never imagined that it wouldn't be compatible with my computer.  Can you pleas confirm if model LS-WVL/E is compatible with Windows 10 and if there any workarounds to make it work?

Thanks.

It is most likely an issue with SMB. You may have purchased this last year, but it hasn't been produced since probably 2014.

It does not support any version of SMB except SMB 1. That is almost certainly the reason that you can't map a drive or see a shared folder on the unit.

I know you posted earlier that you've been through the SMB settings, but there really isn't another reason that Windows 10 wouldn't see the shared folder. There isn't anything else that would make a NAS "compatible" or "incompatible".

From a technical standpoint it's just a network file share. If the NAS and the client are both using the same protocol (SMB 1) and they're both on the same IP network there isn't anything else that should have an affect.

The only other thing that might (although it shouldn't) cause an issue is the Windows firewall. If all else fails try disabling the Windows firewall and see if that makes a difference (although the SMB protocol should already be allowed through the firewall by default).

It worked after I turned the SMB off and on one more time.  I honestly can't believe it's working after weeks of frustration.  I don't recall reading anything out SMB in the troubleshooting section of the user manual.  I attribute this to something I have dubbed the "Nikos Rule", which states a problem will be fixed as soon as you try to reach out for help.

When the user's manual was written everything was compatible with SMB 1, so it wasn't deemed necessary to include it.

Glad you were able to get it working.
