Is there a boot option I'm missing that will allow you to change the boot so it will boot into network mode automatically?  It would be great to be able to place the drive in the other room with the network equipment, and be sure that it will come back up in network mode after a power outage or other disruption and not in USB mode.

There is no option for that with this unit.
