When I plug it into my desktop the computer says new hardware found but there is no icon for the drive under My Computer.  I tried installing the software from this website but it says "Now Driver Install ! !" check to replug drive icon in my computer. replug usb.  I have never seen the light on the top of the unit come on either if that means anything.  This is a refurbished unit which I didn't know until I opened it and read the paper.

Will need more info.

Operating System on your computers? (versions etc).

Port type you are connecting to (i.e. USB 1.1, USB 2.0 etc)?

Going through any switch or splitter device, or direct connect?

It's just a regular USB, 1.1 I'm pretty sure.  I'm using XP Pro version 2002 service pack 3.  Direct connect, just straight from the unit into my computer's USB input and straight from the unit into the power outlet.  Is the light supposed to be on when it's plugged in?  I can't feel or hear the unit running either.

After sitting in the wall/plugged in for awhile, is the AC adapter's transformer warm at all? How about the drive enclosure itself? I believe the light on the top-front turns blue on startup, that doesn't illuminate either? If no-go, I'd try exchanging, something sounds weird. Especially if you purchased new, got a refurb in the box instead, and it's not even lighting up... The fact that windows detects something shows there's something getting through. Try plugging in the USB without the power cable plugged in...does the computer still detect a USB-device of some sort?

The adapter doesn't feel very warm or the unit.  The computer recognizes a mass usb storage device when the ac is plugged in, but not when it isn't.  I'll try calling Buffalo and hopefully they will give me a ticket number so I can return.

Well I was on hold for at least 15 minutes, I'm not going to wait all day and probably not be helped.  Looks like I'm out 60, live and learn.

Well just something to check I guess.  On the computer you plug into where you don't get any error (but no drive letter(s) show up)...

Can you try right-clicking on My Computer, Left click on Manage..

In the left pane, can you look for Disk Manager.  Click on it.  Do you see any drives (Without partitions or with) show up on the right side?

You should see: Disk 0, Disk 1, Disk 2, etc. for each logical drive your system has.

Just curious if the Drivestation shows up as a Disk there...

Otherwise, I'd try returning it.

And yeah, I've been on hold a few times too, most > 1 hour wait, even during off-times.  To Buffalo, from a customer perspective, please note that we'd appreciate reduced hold times greatly! It's definately a strong decision point for many people w/ regard to future purchases.

Thanks!
