RAID is not a replacement for a backup! Here's why.

Hi all,

I've had a search through this forum to see if I can find a similar thread - if I've missed it, please feel free to point me in the right direction!

Wayyy back in 2011, I bought a driveless Linkstation Pro Duo (LS-WH1.0tgl/r1 - yes, there's an H in there!) on ebay. I also bought 2 x SEAGATE BARRACUDA 3.5" GREEN 2TB 5900/64MB/SATA3 drives and mounted them in RAID0 configuration. It's worked well ever since, essentially being our backup storage and streaming media to a bunch of devices that we have around the house.

Once in a while (like maybe once a year), I'd find that the folder shares were unreachable, but rebooting the NAS would take care of that.

About a week ago, I decided to do a full backup of my work laptop to the NAS (~100GB). Everything went well, but when it was most of the way through, it began to crawl REALLY slowly and at some point, the backup software just gave up. I wasn't too concerned - it missed about 1-2GB of files that I reasoned could be copied up on the next scheduled backup.

The next day, the folder shares didn't seem to be available, so I did my trick of rebooting the NAS, but still no dice. I performed a diskcheck, but they still weren't available. During the course of the diskcheck, I noticed that the I14 message was flashing (the RAID array is being checked) which I would expect, but then there was also an E23 during the check (an error occurred, and the hard drive was removed from the RAID array). When I log into the web interface, the home screen shows no information next to 'HDD space used', however if I look at Disk Management, both disks are there and seem to show the correct size.

So a few questions:
1. Is this a sign that one or both of the disks has died?
2. If no to question 1, is there a process that I can follow to see if I can get the disks to remount?
3. Given that the data isn't critical (I have backups of all the critical data in other places), what would be the best option going forward? Should I swap out the disks, or just reformat?

Thanks for all your help!

I just enabled email notification and rebooted the NAS, and this is the email I got...

A disk has failed, since it's RAID0 the raid has failed also. You will need to replace the failed disk then delete / recreate the RAID.
PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.
Having network issues? Drop me an email: info@interwebsireland.com and we will get it fixed!

Thanks for that davo! I figured as much, just thought I'd ask before I blew the data away.

A couple of further questions if I may?...

- If I swap the disk out, is it as simple as clicking a couple of 'rebuild array' buttons on the NAS web interface?

- I'm toying with the idea of buying 2 x 4TB disks and using RAID1 instead, to avoid this situation in the future. I was thinking of WD Red drives (WD40EFRS). Two drives would cost about AUD$450 delivered, which is about the top end of my budget. Otherwise I see that there's someone selling a few WD Black drives (WD2003FYYZ) on ebay (seller refurbished) for $200 each. I'm tempted to avoid those, given that I have no idea of their history, but it's a good price. Any other suggestions or opinions on drives?

Thanks!
