Hello, I hope someone here can help.

I bought a buffalo NAS drive and after short period decided to update the firmware. DUring the firmware update there was a problem and now my drive is giving errors. My device details are as follows.

1: Device: HS-DH250GL

2: Firmware: Unsure

3: Network: Standard home network utilising broadband router. 1 PC.

The device was ok but at times had slow speed. I thought a update could fix this problem. I tried updating the device but about half way through the process the updater said something along the lines of 'cannot find device canceling and undoing update'. I'm not sure on the exact message.

The device now wasnt booting up and had error code of 6(6 flashes followed by a pause, and repeating). There is also a loud siren. Having found this forum I have followed FAQs 1,2 and 3. After a lot of playing around, I can now get access to the device again using TFTP. TFTP serves uimage and initrd, this silences the alarm. The device can also be found in NAS Navigator. The problem is that I cannot get lsupdater to work and fix the firmware. I have enabled debug mode and ticked force update. Afterwards I click ok and am brought back to the main window. Here, the update option is greyed out and the only option I have is 'find'. Trying to find it is unsuccessful.

I'm connecting directly to the NAS using a normal network cable. I have tried many Ip combinations inluding 192.168.11.1/192.168.11.150 and  169.254.46.1/169.254.46.171.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

JoshC

Whats the IP address of the unit?  And you said that you have it directly connected to your PC via ethernet cable.  Did you set a staic ip address on your LAN side to match up with the NAS.

Example: IF the nas is showing 192.168.11.150, set your Local area connection to something like 192.168.11.151.

Go to network and sharing center and on the left hand side you will see "Manage network connections" click on that and you should see your Local Area Connection.  Right click on that and go to properties.  Look for where it says in the list "Internet Protocall TCP/IP IPV4"  Click on that and go to properties. Choose use the following.  And there is where you set your staic Ip address.

Thank you for the response JoshC. Yes I have been trying this all afternoon but it wouldnt work til now and I have no idea what I did differently. All I did was switch between refreshing nasnavi and changing IP addresses.

I have now upgraded firmware but am having other problems. The first time I went into the web menu everything was in Japanese. I managed to switch the language and everything is ok for now. I got the firmware from the English site, so I don't know why that happened.

The main probllem though is speed. I havent had time to test in great lengths but read speed is terrible. I have tested with a 700mb single file. Write speed for that is 3mins. Reading back the same file estimates a time of 127-189mins. I have waited longer than 5mins and the estimation doesnt seem to be an exaggeration.

I'm a little confused. There seem to be 2 different websites and 3 firmware available for my device (please correct me if I am mistaken). Could you tell me which firmware I should load?

This http://www.buffalotech.com/support/downloads/

or this http://www.buffalo-technology.com/support/downloads/ ?

Version 1.06, 2.10 or 2.11 ?

2.11 is the firmware I have loaded now I believe and the one that defaulted in Japanese.

Thanks

Give me a min. to look into your speed issues.

The current FW version for this unit is 2.11.  You should look a buffalotech.com not buffalo-technology.com (this is our Europe site).  And sometimes a FW update can make the interface show up in japanease.   This is because our FW is written in Japan and translated to English.

ok

I have downgraded to 1.06 but still the same problem.  a 20mb file estimates at 6-12mins.

I changed ethernet frame size, but that made no difference.

Thank you PCPiranhahttp://forums.buffalotech.com/buffalo/view_profile?user.id=2332">

For the record I'm from the UK, but I'm not sure if theres any tangible diff between US an UK firmware.

Ha, I realized that right after I posted (by your IP).

The problem is that we are two seperate divisions,  so there can be differences between FW versions so make sure that you get the FW from the Europe site.

Then let me know if the speed troubles continue.

Thanks PCPiranha. The firmware 1.06 that I have now downgraded to is from the EU site. But the problem still exists.

I've just rebooted every device on the network including router. Estimated time from a 700mb file fluctuates around 1hr.

I think my original firmware was something like 1.03 I upgraded to 1.06 and then 2.10. 2.10 was the firmware that nearly bricked the NAS and I'm a little apprehensive to give it another go. The main reason I tried firmware updating was to fix this issue. Although now it seems to have gotten slightly worse.

I'm going to try asking a relative to try it on their network and see how it goes.  I'm not sure it'll make a difference since a network problem is likely to affect both read/write, but its worth a shot I guess.

Glad I came on this forum.  Everyones very helpful.

I'll let you tomorrow.
