hi drmemroy,

Thanks for the PM, I answer on the thread:

5) that is my case

1) there is a confusion with the definition of BOX. by box I mean the hard-casing buffalo. It is not the cardboard box (i.e. the package). There is a simple sticker with SN on the buffalo hard-casing (since the SN have never been intended to be used as a protection or ID).

If buffalo US wants to use the products' SN to protect its royalties, the SN should be hard printed on the casing of the US products (to be fair). But that probably impossible, since hardware modification depends on Buffalo Japan only.

Points 1 to 3)

The way you explain the SN policy is identical to a dictatorial regime, i.e. "we do things for our own benefit, but it is to protect our customers..."

What about the free choice?

What about the user's choice?

I have requested a simple RAID utility (the XP version and the Vista version) on this thread for a:

Drive Station Duo HD-W1.0 TIU2/R1 I have purchased in Japan (my current location)

It is mentioned in the second message at the beginning of this thread.

The utility is has no bundles, as most of the buffalo utilities and drivers.

I was expecting an answer like this from a buffalo officials:

"alright, understand we have to protect our assets, but if you only need a utility or a driver for your product and you rather use the US web site to download it, PM us or send a message to the tech support with the product name on the US market. Of course Buffalo US takes no responsibility for the installation and will not provide you any support". Such message would have helped and relieved me!

I have been using US drivers on JP product for 5 years now. At 99% the products are identical, only the name changes. I can speak Japanese, but I cannot read the Kanji on a Japanese download web page. So, as long as I remain in Japan, I have to rely on the availability of the drivers and utilities on the US web site (or Singapore) before to purchase a product where I currently live.

I perfectly understand that Buffalo officials on the forum have to conform to Buffalo policy. But in some particular situation, exceptions (like the option to contact the buffalo support for a driver request) could be made to facilitate the process.

Thanks.

N.B.: as I have mentioned before, on Buffalo Singapore all drivers and utilities are available, however, they are not always up-to date. To get the latest driver the US Buffalo site is (was ;-)) the best.

So you live in Japan, you bought the device in Japan and yet you dont speak Japanese and its Buffalo's policy fault. Sure, i can see your logic!

I speak Japanese fluently, but can not read well enough to understand The GUI. I too think it would be nice for international traveling business people and others to know they can count on Buffalo to take care of them. After all these devices are usually designed with worldwide current in mind why not worldwide flexibility? To be honest I have several products from the competion and they give out drivers and software without a hitch. Hopefully this will change with Buffalo. This kind of issue will show up as poor sales because tech mined people are always moving to the next best thing, we communicate quickly and warn each other about companies at the drop of a hat. See for yourself google for people compalaining about this download policy and see what I mean, I found this website that way. All in all Buffalo makes a good product. I hope the hassles can be improved.
