LS-VL Drive failure - Help.....

My old reliable LS-VL(LS-VLB2D) seems to be giving up the ghost.
Is there a way to replace the drive and allow the unit to format for use?
Or is the operating system on the drive and not CMOS?

Started getting write errors last night  :'(
