Cannot access share folder on Linkstation

Hi,

My linkstation stopped working recently, I managed to flash the firmware by using debug mode but the NAS Navigator will not map network drives.

I can connect via \\ipaddress and see the folders, I can browse the Info folder and view contents fine, also I can create a new folder via the web access portal. However I cannot view any of my data on the share folder, I just get errors.

I ran the disk checker via the web interface and it reported no errors.

What are my options now?

Looks like I will have to re-format and loose all my data - on the same day as I bought a backup server!!

Try remapping the drive with your firewall and antivirus software disabled.  Also you can set the unit back to factory defaults with in the web interface.  (you will not lose any data by doing this, however you will loose your user configurations).

mik_da_man

Ok, I can't access the web interface anymore.

The unit is in Emergency mode and I can find it using the firmware updater, but when I try to uodate it it looses the connection.

All the firewall / antivirus are off.

looks like i'll be returning it soon.....

Only other thing i would recommend at this point is to force the firmware the directions are listed below

  • Download and extract all files from the firmware update. DONOT download the firmware to the NAS itself. The file is to be executedon a PC separate from the device. Running the firmware update from thedevice itself can lock out the NAS and make it unreadable.
  • Open up the .ini file (usually something like LSUpdater.ini) in a text editor program. It should read something like this:
[Application]
Title = BUFFALO LS-GL Updater Ver.1.03 w/Debug
WaitReboot = 240

[Target]
ProductID = 0x0009
Name = LS-GL
Password = password

[Flags]
VersionCheck = 1
  • Make the following changes (add SpecialFlags and Debug, and change Version check to 0, DO NOT CHANGE THE OTHER SECTIONS!):
[Application]
Title = BUFFALO LS-GL Updater Ver.1.03 w/Debug
WaitReboot = 240

[Target]
ProductID = 0x0009
Name = LS-GL
Password = password

[Flags]
VersionCheck = 0

[SpecialFlags]
Debug = 1
  • Save the changes and launch the updater .exe file (usually something like LSUpdater.exe).
  • Right-click on the program's taskbar tab and choose "Debug (D)...".
  • You now have some new config options:
    • "Do not check version" - Tells it to not check the version, check this when forcing.
    • "Rebuild partition table" - As far as we know, deletes andrewrites the partition table. Not necessary for force, but may be validif not worried about data.
    • "Delete user-config" - Should just delete the user-madeconfiguration changes (like Maintenance->Initialization in GUI), butmay delete data, so be cautious.
    • "Force update" - Tells it to force the update even if the same version is already on there, check to do a force of update.

Did all the above and it didn't work...

Tech support confirmed that it's a hardware fault and I'm due a replacement.

Pretty annoyed that I didn't get to back my data up

Live and learn......

I'm really annoyed too.  I have a

Buffalo Linkstation GigaBit HS-DH500GL
Sony XP Media.

Its sitting on a shelf at home and has no physical movement or knocks.  Its just died on me and though I can ping it, I can't access the share or login ot get to the web page.  My biggest worry is losing the family photo archive.

Hello Guys, I have the exact same problem on my LS-WSGL/R1 F/W 1.04, firmware v1.04, RAID 1:
- Access to LinkStation using Shared Folder on Windows XP = OK
- Access to Info folder using Shared Folder on Windows XP  = OK
- Access to Data folder using Shared Folder on Windows XP = NOK, access not authorized
- Access to WEB Console using Admin id = OK
- Access to Shared Folder Setup WEB Page = everything is grayed out, can't click to configure
It seems, that others have already reported this issue to Buffalo Tech Support (see http://forums.buffalotech.com/buffalo/board/message?board.id=0101&thread.id=1264&view=by_date_ascending&page=3">here), but they were unable to provide a solution for it.
I have bought the Buffalo Link Station to use it as a backup disk for my family data, no others backup media...
Having read what the others users have done without success, I will not upgrade my firmware nor do any other actions until having the security that it will not affect my data and my access to my backup data.
Buffalo Tech Support, please provide a working solution ! We are now blocked without backups anymore.

Just a precision: using NASNavigator 2.05, it tells me that he sees the disk has Unformatted...
The LinkStation Mini never moved and stays on top of my PC, no knocks, no physical injury never happened to the disk.
Why suddenly this loss of configuration ? Can I recover my data ?
I am really worried:smileysad:

Dustrega

Staviadaf and khwajasy,

   Download the NAS Navi client from http://www.buffalotech.com/support/getfile/?TsClient.zip" target=_blank>here and take a look at the firmware fields. Let me know what you see.

Staviadaf

Hi Dustrega,
As already written before, firmware = 1.04 and your software confirms.

Staviadaf

Hello, I had a look to the LinkStation when it boots. Here is the sequence:
  1. Power on - LinkStation LED blinks blue and green LED is solid
  2. After few seconds, the LinkStation LED continues blinking blue and green LED blinks (network activity)
  3. After a few time, LinkStation LED stays solid blue and green LED blinks when communicating with my PC
  4. After ca 10 seconds, the orange LED blinks 5 time (and it does it 5 times), then turns off
  5. Then back to same state than point 3 a second time
  6. Then again to same state than point 4 a second time
  7. Then LinkStation LED stays to solid blue, green LED also. Everything seems normal.
Looking into manual, orange LED blinking 5 times means ROM problem.
I think we know were is the problem now !
In this situation, before sending you back the equipment, how can I recover my data ?

Dustrega

Staviadaf,

   You could recover the data by hooking the HDDs up to a Linux based machine or booting into a Linux environment such as Knoppix. Since the file system is in an XFS format that's really the only way. Some other things I would like to ask would be:

1. Did you try holding down the FUNC button while powering the unit on, releasing it after 10 seconds and holding it down for another 10?

2. Since this is a confirmed ROM issue only one of two things could be happening:

    -a. The firmware is corrupt and can possibly be recovered by manually booting into EM via the steps mentioned in 1.

    -b. The onboard memory is the issue which can only be fixed via RMA.

   Hope this answers your questions :)

Staviadaf

Hello Dustrega,

To answer your questions:

  1. No, I did'nt reset the unit :smileywink:
  2. I vote for -a.

I explain you why I think about a corrupted firmware:

When I shut down my PC, an external outlet cuts the electrical power to all my connected machines (Green IT, save the planet :robothappy: )...

It may be that, one time, the electrical power went down when the unit was shutting down and writting to its ROM, thus corrupting ROM (?). Who knows ?

My last question:

If I apply steps in 1., would I still be able to access my data in XFS via Linux later ? In another way: should I try the firmware reset before the recovery effort ?

Thanks for your help !

If you can see the folder when you login tolinkstation try goig to a section called Extensions - Web Access - Now Enable the folder to Allow all Users/groups and save.
Even though you did not setup for Web access this works now you can go back into the same spot and set to Disable.
I did this and I now have access.

FYI I am using a LS-WVL/E but I suspect the firmware on different NAS units could be similar
