Cannot update firmware to LinkStation Mini 1TB

I've been having problems with my PS3 and LinkStation Mini co-operation. MP3 files that are stored in network drive are shown only partly or not at all on PS3. I thought to give a try to firmware update, but I had no success. Not that I know if it would solve the actual problem...

Anyways. I'm using my laptop mostly wirelessly. NAS Navigator finds the drive very rarely, but sometime it does. Same thing with cable. So, the problem is that if NAS Navigator cannot find the drive, how am I supposed to update firmware? When I run the LSUpdater it just complains that "LS-WSGL/R1 that needs updating wasn't found".

I've tried every hint that I've found: disabling firewall and antivirus software, starting drive in EM mode, connecting network cable directly to drive, changing my laptop's IP manually, modifying LSUpdater.ini and god knows what. Any suggestions?

I'm running Windows XP, NAS Navigator 2.11 and trying to update firmware from 1.05 to 1.06. Laptop and drive are in same subnet.

Quick question- You can access the data and web interface fine?

And can you please provide a model number for this unit?

Have you tried a different computer?

Go here, http://www.buffalotech.com/support/downloads/" target=_blank>Downloads and select the Product Model "TeraStation" then download the "Client Utility" and see if that can find it.

It seems as though there maybe a firewall issue, make sure windows firewall is OFF. Also don't just turn off your antivirus, make sure that the built-in firewall is independently disable.

Make sure that when you plug the LS into your comp that you Manually set an IP address for your LAN connection and that it is not the exact same thing as the LS (to avoid IP conflicts) and that your wireless is turned off.

Yep, I can access data by typing IP into explorer window. Also web interface works ok. I'm not quite sure if this is what you're looking for, but model is LS-WS1.0TGL/R1. I haven't tried on a different computer yet, mine is the only one that's been available.

Windows FW should be off, but I'm not absolutely sure if there's some other service running on background (I'm running company laptop which has remotely administrated antivirus software, I don't know if there's a firewall as well.)

What you said about setting up the IP was pretty much what I tried but with no success... Firewall might explain this behavior, but then again I guess it wouldn't show up in NAS Navigator every now and then as it now does.

Thanks for the download link, I'll give it a try :)

Yeah see if that utility can find it, I know the Navi v2 does have some bugs when searching the network.

This does seem to be a firewall issue, software firewalls never work perfect. One day they will allow something and the next it will block it. Try booting your comp into Safe Mode with Networking, and then see if you can find it.

Let us know if your still having issues

Oh well, things are going worse. Now it seems that I cannot access web interface nor data. I see that the drive has valid IP and also my PS3 sees it so it's somewhat alive. I tried to access it in safe mode and it was found by NasNavigator and LSUpdater, but when I tried to upload the firmware it didn't approve my password, so I guess that at some point it has defaulted to factory settings or something equally strange. Also, I didn't remember the default password so I couldn't update the firmware. Guess I'll have to try again...

*sigh*

PCPiranha

The default password should just be "password"

Miihkali

That was my thought as well, but it didn't work...

A small update to my previous post: I can access the data in safe mode, when NAS Navigator finds the drive. Everything seems to be intact, which is a relief. I could also access to web interface login site, but not from IP 192.168.11.3 which it has been earlier, but 192.168.11.150. Also it seems that the site is in japanese (I guess) and it doesn't accept neither my own nor default password.

kevin

If you can only access it from safe mode, it is probably a firewall issue.

As for the language:

Log into the interface and go the the Tab directly under "TOP" and set the second to last drop box to English, press the button at the bottom left. Then you need to wait at least one to two full minutes for it to fully translate (just keep refreshing the browser). Once in English go to Basic and set the last drop box to "CP437"

Miihkali

I would, but the problem is that it doesn't accept neither mine nor the default password so I cannot log in :(

Is there a way to reset the password without losing the data?

PCPiranha

You can try the standard reset procedure:

1. Move the power switch to the ‘Off’ position(rear). The LinkStation PRO DUO will shut down after about 45 seconds.

2. While holding down the function button(rear for 6 sec), movethe power switch to the ‘On’ postion(rear). The Function LED will beginto flash blue.

3. Push the Function button again while the Function LED is flashing.

4. LED on the front will flash Blue, then will turn to Green when process is complete.

If that doesnt work you can boot the unit into emergancy mode by booting he unit on for 20 seconds then pulling out the power.  Repeat the process 4-5 times and it should boot into EM mode.  You can then perform the force update procedure and check the "delete user config" option.  In emergancy mode it shouldn't require a password.

kevin

Press and hold the function button for 15 seconds... though this will only work if the LS is set to not reset password upon a reset.

Great thing, I finally managed to reset the password and update firmware! Thanks for the tips :)

However, I haven't managed to change the language from Japan to English... I did all the steps required, but every time when I reload the page, the text in language combo box has changed from English back to Japanese. And yes, I pushed the "Apply" button (or it's Japanese counterpart) after changing the setting.

This is sligthly annoying, but nothing I cannot live with.

davo

The language is set to Japanese.Follow the instructions to set back to English.1.       Connect to the web configuration utility by entering the LinkStation's IP address in a web browser. 2.       In the column of blue items on the left handside, select the second link (the one below TOP). 3.       Under the first header are two text fields (its for Name and description of the LinkStation); enter or modify the text in the second field. 4.       Under the third header, the first entry is aradio selection with two options (you should be able to read NTP);select the one on the right. 5.       Under the fourth header (with two menu boxes beneath it), set both menu boxes to the second entry in the list. 6.       Click the Apply button and wait till the page has refreshed, after that select on the left hand side the "TOP" button.

Finally everything works as supposed! My PS3 sees the files, web interface is in

English, firmware is updated and my girlfriend is extremely happy that I don't have to be tweaking the drive all night long anymore :D

Thanks to everyone who contributed, you were a great help!
