Need help with Bricked Linkstation mini - USB drive

It appears as if my linkstation mini is now a brick following a powercut.  It used to be present but in EM mode but now I can't seem to find it on the network.  At times the red light flashes 6 times (Hard drive not found, or ppc_uartd is not running).  It's quite old and this is the second mini I've had fail so I had all the data backed up but I've got an attached USB drive, that I'd like to recover but am unsure as to how to go about continuing to use the USB drive without a Buffalo NAS drive now.
