I have a 500GB WD (WD5000AAKS) that I was using in slot 2 of NAS, yesterday I removed the drive and installed a WD 1TB drive in it's place.  I put the 500GB in a external Airlink enclosure and connected it to the NAS USB.  The NAS detects it but says the drive needs to be formatted.  Request help in moving the data off the 500GB to the 1TB.

The LinkStation sees the internal and external drives differently.

Your best option is to put the original drive back in the unit and back up the data to a third location, then put the 1TB drive in and do a fresh initialization of the unit with the 1TB drive, then restore the data.

Texturle,

So, I have already put some data on the 1TB, so if I do the following steps do you see any problems:

1. Remove the 1TB
2. Insert the 500G
3. Initialize
4. Copy/Move data from 500G to 3rd location
5. Remove 500G
6. Insert 1TB
7. Initialize
8. Copy/move data from 3rd to 1TB

Do not initialize after putting the 500GB drive back in. I presume there is still some data on that drive that you wish to preserve.

So here are the steps I would recommend:

1. Power off the LinkStation
2. Remove the 1TB
3. Insert the 500G
4. Boot the LinkStation
5. Copy/Move data from 500G to 3rd location
6. Power off the LinkStation
7. Remove 500G
8. Insert 1TB
9. Initialize
10. Copy/move data from 3rd to 1TB
