How can I change the default username on a Buffalo NAS box from 'Admin' --- It's greyed out and it's an open season ticket for a web hacker.

In the GUI in the "File Sharing" section, click on the settings for "Users". Click on the user "Admin". Click the "Edit" button. From there you can change the username and password for the admin account.

Keep in mind that when you bring up the GUI it will still default to the user "Admin" so you'll need to check the box "Log in as a different user" each time you log in to the GUI.

Thanks Texturtle - I've done all that. I just wish to get rid of the "Admin" name that is greyed out and replace it with either "bank" or another pseudo name.

Do you know if you can get at the web files on the NAS?

Texturtle

There's no way to replace the default. You have to choose to log in with a different name.
