Linkstation as DLNA Server- There Are No Items To Display

I've been racking my brain and googling like crazy, but can't get this problem figured out. I've also seen some similar posts here.  I have a Buffalo Linkstation HS-DH500GL that I'm using as my NAS. It (supposedly) is DLNA compliant as a media server. I've used it for the last year or so to stream movies, etc. through a modded Xbox. Now I've upgraded to a new TV (Sony KDL-46W5100 with built-in ethernet) and a Playstation 3. I also have a WDTV Live that replaced the Xbox. I can browse to the server through the network through the WDTV to play all of my files, but cannot access it as a Media Server in either the WDTV nor the TV nor the PS3. That's where the above message appears when I go to the folders portion of the Media Server list. Since I get this same message from the WDTV, PS3, and the Sony TV, I'm assuming it must be something to do with the Buffalo box. I've gone into the browser management and set up the DLNA server (they call it PCast) and that has allowed me to browse to the directories, but then I get that message. This is for pictures, music, and video files. Does anyone have any idea as to what I'm doing wrong? My gut tells me it's something simple I'm overlooking, but I cannot figure out what.  If not, I now will have a rather expensive back-up drive and have to upgrade to a NAS that can operate as a Media Server.  And I'm thinking that won't be a Buffalo if what I've seen around the forums is correct.  Please show me to be wrong.

Whenever possible please included the Model Number and the Firmware Version.

Try this.

Depending on your model it might be in a different place.

Log into the web admin page and go to maintenance>initialization>restore.

Set the Media Server back up and make sure you check the box to refresh your data base.

I too am suffering from the same problem.  I have the following setup:

Buffalo Linkstation Live HS-DH500GL firmware 1.06

Sony Blu-Ray BDP-S370 (updated today 26/07/10)

The Blu-Ray player can see the linkstation but cannot see any of the files or the tree structure.

I have tried structuring the folders differently but to no success.  Do I need to perform an upgrade of my firmware on my LS Live?

Many thanks in advance.

What kind of media is stored on the device extension-wise?

Hmmm - that is exactly my setup and also exactly my problem! I have a linkstation live which has the very same problem - I can stream from it fine using a remote media player accessing it simply as a remote drive (ie an internet radio device with network play ability) but nothing I have that tries to talk DLNA to it works. I can see the folders fine, but I get the same error message (no media to play) whenever I try to access individual folders (Artist, Album, etc). It is def a problem with the Linkstation because I have tried it with several DLNA devices including the latest Sony 370s Bluray player and I have the same problem...

surely there must be a fix for this - after all what's the point in us buying 'media server' drives which don't actually, er, serve media...?

My setup is a HS-DHGL614 (250Gb HS-DH250GL) running latest firmware 2.11. I have never managed to get it to work on DLNA/upnp from new out of the box... It works fine as an external drive on the network but not with any DLNA devices that I have tried it with including my newest device the Sony S370 Bluray player. I can see the drive no problem on my Sony S370 network connections, and I can browse to folder level ('Artist', 'Genre' etc) but as soon as I click on the folder itself to access the media files I get the message 'no media' or 'no files to play' or something similar. This is the same error as I get with a networked audio player (MOS internet radio/network player) and also via a couple of Android apps I have tried...

I have enabled pcast on the drive, which presumably is why I can see the relevant shared folders fine, but for some reason the drive is simply not serving up the actual media contained within the folders.

All the files are basic mp3 etc so this is nothing to do with player compatibiity (as I said, the files play fine when the drive is used simply as an external drive eg on the internet radio/player device.)

I would be very grateful if someone could direct me to a solution, especially as it seems like others have similar problems.

It seems bizarre that a NAS drive marketed, sold and bought for the media server features it claims to have refuses to serve any media...

Or should I return it and get a different brand that will do what it says on the tin? I would rather get it working, because apart from this glaring DLNA issue it's a fine drive.

Well I thought i'd post an update - because against all my expectations the drive has now started working properly at last...!

Installed firmware 2.11, didnt seem to help. Went back into the pcast settings and redid everything there, could see the attached dlna devices fine, re-enabled them in the pcast options, refreshed database, and hey presto the blu ray player now sees the LS and can access and play all the files via category listings. Interestingly, the blu ray player now lists 2 LS devices - the original one is still shown but is inactive but the 'new' (working) one also appears in the device list on the BD player.

Good news also is that my internet radio/network player has also started seeing the LS as a upnp device, so I can browse and play files on there too now.

Even better is the fact that with the new Sony BDRemote Android app I can control it all from my HTC Desire :-) :-)

Oh yes and there is also a cool Android app called Andromote which acts as a dlna player, it also sees the LS now and I can stream my media direct to the handset off the LS :-)

Hi,

I have the same set up as you, and I can see and access my folders. Are you able to stream MKV or M2ts files?

I've also got TV Mobili DLNA Server software running on a PC and the S370 sees and plays MKV files fine, but not the Linkstation. Was just wondering if there was anything that I might have missed.

Cheers

http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/13976" target="_self">jvn01 , glad to hear that its finally working for you. Ankman, I don't think that the linkstation can stream those kinds of files.

ankman

Ok , think i may have a way around it anyway

Thanks for the input.

Cheers
