Gentlemen i salute you.

i read many topics before witing this, so i need your help.

I just connected my 2TB Terastation TS-RIGL (ver 1.01) Iscsi on the HP Procurve Gigabit switch, where there are 2 PC's connected as well ,with Gigabit ethernets. When transfering data between the two pcs, the speed is 200-300MBps, so i would expect that speed to happen between the terrastation and the PC's.

however, when i transfer data from a PC to the Terrastation the speed is stuck at 50MBps, which is less than 100Mbps LAN. i fiddled with all the Jumbo frames options (tried them all), but the speed is stuck there.

Im positive, from the reading i done, that this baby can perform MORE, but i dunno how to improve its performance. i mean this is slower than a 100mbps cheap NAS!!

please assist me as im in need to use this system as my old one failed.

thank you in advance.

hihnen

I have the same issue ... 2x 4TB Boxes connected to a Gigabit ProCurve switch which is linked to a second, dedicated gigabit card in a windows server.

I'm only getting ~80MBit. :-(

Writing to both boxes parallel = ~160MBit, so the network isn't limited ...

Are you using MS iSCSI  Initiator too?

pekker

Yeap ! i downloaded Microsoft iSCSI Initiator from microsoft today.

is there an alternative iSCSI initiator?

do you think its the procurve switch?

hihnen

Hmm, maybe.

Or maybe Raid-5 is to slow (Software-Raid).

Currently I'm rebuilding the boxes with Raid-10 to test the performance,  so I will see if it is the network or the box itself.

Checking remaining time: ~330 Minutes ...

Btw ... never use "erase disks" during testing, this took _3 days_ on my 4TB boxes.

LOL Ok.

the only thing i erased is the default array volume at the beggining and recreated it and it took 3 mins. i dont think ill be deleting the disks..so thanks for the advice :-)

anyway, i thinks its a good idea to tray Raid-10 , although it doesnt really make sense that raid-5 would be so slow. im really looking forward to see what happens..

Already read...and we are opting for that magic 300Mbps .... but we're not getting it!!  80Mbps<300Mbps

its way to slow ...terrastation Pro II , iSCSI... 80Mbps???? no way....somethings wrong

hihnen

Dito, already read that.

But I can't reach that performance with Raid-5.

I'm reaching 100MBit speed on a 1000MBit switch with 1000 MBit FullDuplex links.

Btw. the switch is a "ProCurve Switch 2810-48G (J9022A)" with Jumbo Frames enabled for that ISCSI VLAN.

apparently jumbo frames wont do much of a difference. from what i read , we should be getting atleast 200Mbps with standard frames...

after all the 2 boxes connected on the gigabit switch only support standard frames and can reach 200Mbps easily..

hihnen

Test done.

(Copy of one 4GB file from a fast 4GBit FC SAN Raid-1 to iSCSI Buffalos)

Raid-5: ~80MBit

Raid-10: ~230MBit

Raid-0: ~260MBit

So ... the CPU of the Buffalo boxes is the bottleneck. To slow for raid and iSCSI.

Common - a 3TB Raid-5 with ~80MBit .... thats useless, you need DAYS to BACKUP it.

We are now looking for an other solution, the Speed of Raid-10 is okay but that's not enough space for our projekt.

thats a shame... such a waste of money if you cant use Raid-5 at a decent speed :-(
