AD "Integration" and the LinkStation Pro Duo

Before I make three bad purchases, I want to check in on something that seems rather alarming about the LS Pro Duo and AD Integration.

Please correct me if I'm wrong (really, I beg of you), but the impression I get from the forums is that the "integration" between Active Directory and the LinkStations is that I can only download users and groups and apply those users and groups to shares I have already created on the Buffalo.

I am currently looking to place file servers in each location that we have - which is managed by a central AD server.  Each server would handle approximately 500 accounts (not simultaneously!).  I thought this would solve our issues very easily, but it sounds like this is not the solution for us.

If this is the case, does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thank you!

The unit will pull all of your AD users, groups and passwords from the AD server.  However you have to assign the rights for the users/groups on the Buffalo unit from the web interface of the NAS.  You can not push this down from the AD server.

Right... that's what I was afraid of.  Additionally, from what I read, this also doesn't allow "sub" shares, e.g. you cannot have a folder named "2009" and a group of 150 user home folders with specific permissions in that folder.

So... does anyone have any other suggestions?  That is to say... alternatives?  I have a bad feeling the only measure I can take is to buy a server and set it up at each location...

I just bought an LS Pro Duo and am in the process of setting it up.  I set up AD, and have just discovered the issue discussed in this post.  Is there any way to manage subfolder permissions short of setting up multiple shares and mapping the appropriate shares to every single workstation in the office?

Jason

No, although most people write a script to map shares to multiple workstations instead of doing it manually, although that's up to you.
