Hi , i hope someone can help me .
I have had the above since November 2012 without any issues . Yesterday without warning i lost the drive from my list of network items in Windows.

Today i turned it on and have a flashing red light on the front of the unit.  There is no sign of the NAS in  Navigator so i cannot interpret the red light and what it signifies (Or can I ?)

The lights on the rear of the unit are both flashing green for the Power and LAN but when switched on the fan is not spinning .

Is this a terminal fault or is there something i can try to rectify the issue.  I have two hard drives inside running one main 3TB and one as a backup (sorry not very technical )

I suppose my other question would be how to transfer all the data stored if the unit is dead ,

OK, so I have an update ,

I took out the number 1 hard drive (1 of 2) and the unit immediately sprung to life and the fan started working again.

I now have a fixed blue LED but a red flashing light showing one long red flash followed by 6 short ones.

I presume this is something to do with a configuration error as I have removed one of my discs .

I can now see the unit again in my Network in Windows Explorer and all the files are available to me as normal.

Can I presume from this that the second hard disc is faulty ?

If you can access your data after removing one disk. The disk you removed is most likely the bad one. Though i would get all your data off it first just incase. Next i would put the drive back in. if the first issue starts to happen then its the first drive you removed. If your in warranty call and get a RMA. If you are not, buy a new disk. same size disk. Doesn't have to be the exact same model but try to find one with similar specs. RPM, cache size, blah blah.

If you not sure what i mean. Just buy the same model, Western digital for western digital or seagate for seagate. Of course this is if you cannot find the same disk. If you want you can post the model number here or take a pic of the disk and post it here and ill try to find one for you.

Hi , Thanks for the info ,

I have found the disc on another a well known computer website.  I am slightly out of warranty but the support guys have sent my request to be replaced so i'm hoping .................  Will see what price they come up with if I have to buy one

Makes a good case for Raiding the drives doesn't it otherwise I would have lost everything on the Dead drive .

Thanks for the offer of help , will come back if I get stuck.

What is the second part of the word in most Buffalo products (or am I just being really thick here) LOL!!!

Hi all,

Ok so i purchased another Seagate disc , the same as the one that is already in the Raid Array and now want to rebuild that array . I have used the instructions in the manual and gone through storage etc and come to the Raid array screen
Mine is shown as array 1   . Disc 1 - error   disc 2 - array 1

When i press re-build i get a warning message that "The disc being used to re-build the array will be deleted " are you sure you wish to continue ?

Can someone confirm for me that this refers to the new disc and that the data on my "good " disc will not be deleted ?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but i have never attempted this before and there is some pretty important  stuff on the good disc   ,

also anyone know roughly how long it will take to re-build / the discs are both 3TB

This should not delete your drive with data. Ill explain. So when it states "The disc being used to re-build the array will be deleted", it is applying that the disk that is going to be used to rebuild your current raid is going to be delete. Current Raid is the other disk which has your data. That disk is still in a raid 1 and is waiting on the new disk.

In honest opinion you need a back up of your data. Raid is not a backup if you have no other source of your data. Buy a portable usb drive and copy the data over once a month or something. You never know what can happen.

Ok ,

Thanks for all your help , apparently my disc is under warranty so it has gone back to somewhere in Holland and will be replaced .

New disc purchased and Raid re-built and is now working perfectly .  Re-build took 11 hours . I will use replaced disc as a external back up in future.

Hi...I tried what this person did, but it didn't help me. I have a 4 TB and an 8 TB both buffalo storage units. My 4 TB is the one I'm having a problem with. NAS/Navigator says there is a communication error and I checked both drives by taking one out and then the other and from having only one in at a time, it doesn't see anything. I don't know what else to do now. All of my business stuff is on the 4 TB which I can't see nothing at this time. Could use some help.
Thanks
M
