RAID is not a replacement for a backup! Here's why.

LS-WXL Drive Failure RAID 1

My LS-WXL just took a 4 foot drop.  Configured for RAID1.

Clicking noise coming from Drive 1.  Audible alarms when powering up.  No connectivity over Ethernet.  Error LED flashes E07 (not in manual).

Pulling Drive 1 and repowering gets rid of clicking noise and gives E16 (Creating RAID).  WebUI works.

Question 1: If I just replace Drive 1, will the RAID rebuild itself (assuming no damage to Drive 2)?

Question 2: Is there something magical about the drive type?  Or will any SATA drive of the same capacity work?

Question 3: Is there anything precluding using a larger drive for the replacement?

Thanks,

Dave

Question 3:

1. No, you need to manually do this via the system/storage/array1 section.

2. No, it's usually a standard sata2 disk but check the label on the faulty disk.

3. No, you can use a larger drive if you want but you will not get any greater capacity.

Follow up to question 3. If replacing the failed drive with a higher capacity, can I then replace the OTHER drive with the same higher capacity to increase total capacity - while maintaining RAID 1 and assuming no data loss?

Step 1: Replace drive #2 (2TB) with 4TB drive.
Step 2: let array rebuild
?? Step 3: Replace drive #1 (2TB) with 4TB drive.
?? Step 4: Rebuild array

Is the array now ~4TB or still the 1.8TB?

What are the recommended steps to increase RAID array capacity without data loss.

Thanks,
Al

You can't increase the capacity of the RAID without the existing data being erased, you would need to backup the data first.
