LS421DE backup jobs still running but all backup jobs are deleted!

I have one LS421DE with one 3TB drive('A') mirroring to a second identical setup ('B') over LAN.
I've been using the internal backup software to save differential files from A to B on a once-a-week basis.
I'm going with another external backup software because I have had too many problems and too little visibility with the software.  According to tech support, if my backup jobs fails for some reason the only way to remove the fault is to remove the backup job and rebuild it from scratch.  Not acceptable!  And I seem to get errors too often.
Anyway, I deleted all the backup jobs adn came in this morning to find a 'backup job error' I54, same as usual.  Except there are no jobs in place.  I added one dummy job and rebooted the NAS but I still get the red blinking LED.  And I don't want any undesired backup actions going on!
I'm ready to just force a factory reset but I have a lot of data to migrate off-NAS before I try that so it's my least preferred solution.
thanks
Matt
