Hello, I have 2 500GB Freecom USB HDD, identical models.

When i plug either of the drives into either of the 2 usb ports on the back of the linkstation, it recognizes the usb drive.

If however i plug both drives in at the same time, the linkstation only recognises whichever drive is plugged into the left hand usb port (when looking over from the front)

Any ideas? both freecom drives are set up identically.

thanks

Asa

LinkStation Live recognize only 1 USB hard drive. That's a limitation of LinkStation Live. It guess second port is for a printer.

   That happens if you have 2 identical drives. There is no real solution except using 2 different.

bigasa

   is there no way then, of telling one of the drives to appear as something different?

Unfortunatly not. Sometimes it works but it is not a 100% solution.

 * set Windows client language to CP850 (make sure you have a copy of all data before you do)

 * Unassign USB drives in the settings

 * power down, connect one, power up

 * same with the second

That could work, otherwise it's as I said and no way to "mask" one.

CP850 is for Europe, so don't do this if you live in North America. Make sure you choose the correct Windows Client Language for your region.

@Colin

Oh, you mean CP850 does not work because it includes a few more characters.... interesting. What do you advise spanish speakers over there who use EN,ES? (and where is written CP850 is for Europe because it contains more special characters? ISO 8839 is a different story) IMHO it is the most compatible setting and it works well with MAC too.

@bigasa

If you don't have a backup it is probably not worth to invest a lot of time for a small chance. But still... I don't know why but it was the only setting for me it ever worked with 2 identical drives. That's what I'm saying.

And just to make it clear, if you change the client language it could happen that some data just disappear.

thanks guys, the drives are recognised when i plug them into the laptop direct, its only when i plug them into the linkstation....

would this 'windows' fix enable the linkstation to see both drives?

would the data be lost from the drives? the linkstation? the computer?

its a bit strange offering two expansion ports on the linkstation but not mentioning that both drives can be the same... i would have thought it quite likely that customers might have 2 of the same drives to plug in...

thanks for your help.. ps. im in the uk.

Yes, the problem is understood.

If you cange the Windows client language in the LinkStation setting it could happen that some data on the LinkStation just disappear.

Better leave it. So far as I know the problem is reported and hopefully the developers come up with a solution to improve the handling of 2 identical drives.

bigasa

   thanks again, actually, the linkstation is fresh, so has no data..... the only data is on the usb drives i was looking for a way to take my laptop out of the loop so bought the linkstation because of its 2 usb ports.... if the data on the usb is safe, then i dont mind changing settings on the linkstation...
