Win 8,1 with wbadmin backup on LS-WXL2EB?

Under windows 8 I was using the "windows 7" image backups over the lan to the nas just fine to my LS-WXL2EB.

After "upgrading" to 8.1, that option of course went away and wbadmin is suggested for use in it's place. The problem I have is that it won't recognize the LS NAS share, returning:

ERROR - The specified backup location could not be found or is not a supported backup storage location.

After some digging, it seems this may be due to sparse files not being enabled on the NAS share. Is there any way to enable that to allow wbadmin to work?

If not - what do you recommend as a backup solution for 8.1 over the lan (multiple laptops)?

Thanks in advance...

Are you sure is the sparse file? usually you should get a error like "the version does not support this version of the file format", there are others i believer but you need a back in there first. So here's a few questions i need to have an answer for.

1. can you get to the share fine on windows 8.1 and write to it?

2. is the share mounted in windows 8.1?

3. what is the LmCompatibilityLevel set to? You can see by opening up "regedit.exe" and Locate the following key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Current Control Set\Control\Lsa "LmCompatibilityLevel". If the key is not there then you need to create it.

From the menu, select Edit, New and then create a new DWORD (32) value with the name of LmCompatibilityLevel. Right-click, select Modify the data value to 1 or 0, Recommend 1.

4. What is the firmware version your LinkStation on?

5. You can always use NovaStor that comes with the LinkStation to backup over the network.
Units I own: TS-XL, TS-WXL, LS-WVL, TS-RXL,  TS5400, TS-RVHL,

I don't work for Buffalo but i do love there products enough to help people

1. Yes, no problems.

2. Yes.

3. There was no such key, so I created one as you suggested - rebooted - and now I am backing up just fine.

4. 1.65

Thanks for you assistance. Have a great week,

Bryan
