Been running my NAS for 2 years now.  Never shut it down or have it go into standby (whatever that switch on the back does.)  Should I ever rest it or put into standby and if so, how?  I do RAID maintenence once a week in the middle of the night and I do a back-up of the NAS automatically to a back-up drive bi-weekly.

THoughts?  I have a 2.0 TB  LS-WVL806 (LS-WVL)

As a side note I do torrent so that affects usage.

It depends on how its used. Like for me, i put all my units except for the main unit to sleep from 2am-9am, as no one uses them during those times. Of course this means you cant back up to them either if there sleep. I treat the units as pc's since that is what they are technically.

I do this because i can save power, and supposedly this can extended the hard drive health.. I am not a guru at knowing whether or not powering off hard drives and turning them back on several hours later can extend there life but i don't really replace drives almost ever so i guess it works to some degree but everyone has different experiences with the Sleep timer.

If you want to try it you will need to see what times the backups happen, what times don't you use it really at all, and what times you aren't using the torrent downloader. Then use the sleep timer under system tab.

The switch in the back has 3 modes, (Auto, On, Manual)

Auto: this will turn off the unit when the unit doesn't detect a computer on the network with Nas Navigator installed.

On: Leaves the unit on/ turns the unit on if coming from off.

Off: Turns the unit off
Units I own: TS-XL, TS-WXL, LS-WVL, TS-RXL,  TS5400, TS-RVHL,

I don't work for Buffalo but i do love there products enough to help people

Thanks for the response.  I just have the one NAS.  The torrents run 24/7 so that obviously is a barrier.  I am just concerned about stressing the drives for such long term use.  Anyone with more comments?
