A remote TS-RHTGL had a disk go bad and the end user replaced it.  Something happened during recovery like a power outage or similar.

Now we're stuck at:

The web interface has a link "Error has occurred in RAID Array1".  Clicking the link brings us to the Disk Management page.  The four check boxes in the Disk Structure section are check-marked and cannot be unchecked.  Only the button to "Delete RAID Array" or "Cancel" is clickable.  "Restructure RAID Array" button is "greyed-out".

Accessing the unit with telnet revealed that md2 is stopped:
md: md2 stopped. <----- last thing in dmesg output
md: bind<sdd6>
md: bind<sdb6>
md: bind<sda6>

The replacement disk partion label is blank

sh-2.05b$ /sbin/fdisk /dev/sdc                       <-------------------------------------------------disk 3
Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/sdc: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

   Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
                                                                                                       <-------------nothing defined
Command (m for help): q

sh-2.05b$ /sbin/mdadm --verbose --examine --scan
ARRAY /dev/md2 level=raid5 num-devices=4 UUID=bac1e9af:8cb27e53:4ea73bcc:326d7dfe
   spares=1   devices=/dev/disk4_6,/dev/disk2_6,/dev/disk1_6

mdadm can't assemble array because no permission on /dev/md2
sh-2.05b$ ls -l /dev/md2
brwxr-xr-x    1 root     root       9,   2 Aug  3  2007 /dev/md2

Is there no way to start the array without root priviledge?
How can I get this unit to rebuild the replacement disk?
IS the spares=1 normal?
thank you

An error has occured on the RAID itself (its a software RAID), it will more than likely need to be deleted and recreated so you will need to refer to your backup.
PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.
Having network issues? Drop me an email: info@interwebsireland.com and we will get it fixed!

Have i helped you? Buy me a coffee as a thanks!

^What he said. Non-graceful interruptions of the rebuild is a Very Bad Thing™.
**A single copy of data, even on a RAID array, is NOT a backup! Hard drive failure is not a question of IF, but WHEN! Don't take my word for it, take Google's!**
