I recently upgraded the disks in this NAS from the 250GB disks to 1TB WD black drives.

Everything went well but, despite the NAS reporting the disks as the correct size ( 976,762,584 kbytes) the Raid 5 array I built only shows "1674.4 GB" and under disk managment:

Status Normal
RAID Mode RAID5
Disk Structure Disk 1, Disk 2, Disk 3, Disk 4
Total Capacity 1,755,708,928 kbytes
Amount Used 11,748 kbytes
Percent Used 0.00 %
File Format XFS

Shouldnt I have closer to 3TB of spacein this array?

Is this a firmware limitation with this older NAS?

Forum searches and google searches havent been much help.

That's normal. The Terastation Pro used the 2.4 Linux kernel, and can only handle RAID arrays of a maximum 2GB in size.

Is there any way to combat this? Can you have two RAID 5 arrays on the same disks?

Even if not RAID, can I regain that exxtra space?

You may be able to create two RAID1 arrays of 1 TB available each. If you delete the RAID array, it should go to JBOD mode with four independent 1 TB drives. If you set up RAID 0 on all four disks, it will most likely only have about 2 TB available for use.

This is all educated speculation... As the device wasn't designed to use drives larger than 500 GB, its behavior isn't all that predictable.
