Backup Question - Incremental

I am backing up everyday from my Linkstation to my USB drive plagged into that linkstation. Backing up about 140GB from one to the other and I have it set as Incremental.

 

So, the first day ran and took hours... which is understandable. But the next days still take hours, yet only a few file changes that day. Is it going to do a full backup everyday and take that long? I was hoping it would just make changes. My goal is to basically have the drive mirrored.

 

Does the incremental backup catalog and make changes or does it fully rebuild the backup everytime?

Three questions:

 

What is the model number of your unit?

 

What firmware are you using?

 

Is your backup set as Overwrite/Complete or just Overwrite?

 

Overwrite/Complete will do an entire backup everytime, overwriting all the data, and Overwrite will just backup the files that were changed since last backup.

Do I have that option? There is a Check Box called Complete Backup... It IS checked and now it is set to incremental. That should do it. Right?

Can I choose where to put the backup log file?

To my knowledge, the backup log file is sent to the destination of the backup.

I had the same problem. I found the solution in the Microsoft Knowledgebase article KB981470. This assumes that you're running Windows 7 Business or Ultimate. The solution involves stopping a windows media player service. The steps are: 1. Click Start, type "Services.msc" in the search programs and files box and press ENTER. 2. In the list of services, right-click "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" and then click "Stop". 3. Right-click the above service, select properties, and select "Manual" for the Startup Type. The problem occurs because the service indexes media files and thereby changes the file metadata - causing the Windows Backup Program to do a full backup.
