Can't access share by name

I have a 12TB Buffalo TeraStation NAS.  It is configured to connect to our domain as a workgroup (due to 1000 user limitation on the domain connections) with authentication delegated to the workgroup / domain controller.  I can access the terastation's web page either by IP address or name.  I can connect to a share on it (say, the user registration share), by IP address (\\x.y.z.w\register), but when I attempt to connect by name (\\foo\register), I get a login dialog and no username  password combo works.

Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?
