Hi,

I have a LS-WVL, which has a number of directories and files that I cannot delete - I don't have permission. Reading various websites, the suggestion is to ftp onto the box and use ftp to delete the files. After a bit of fiddling, I have managed to log on to the buffalo using ftp with the admin account However, the permissions are:

150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for file list
drwx------   2 root     root            6 Sep 13 21:10 Personal

I cannot use chmod, as I do not have permission. I believe I need to logon as root - but can't find the right password ... or the account is disabled.

Stuck. Help! How do I get rid of these files/directories!

First, check your shares have read/write permission in the web admin. Could be an issue with your users. My NAS admin user is the same as my Windows logon to simplify the shared folders access as mapped drives. As for your password issue, if you have  forgotten it, you may need to force update the FW in EM mode. Search "password" posts...

Cheers,

DS

Thanks for the thought, but using ftp I am connecting directly to the buffalo. The theory went that if I logged on as the buffalo "adman" -definitely know the password ;-) I should be able to delete these stray files. However, only buffalo "root" (I believe) has permissions on these files, so I can't reset the permissions, or more importantly just delete the files. Not sure "root" is published anywhere and I suspect from reading blogs that the account has somehow been disabled.

If I use MAC Finder, and connect to the buffalo share as admin, and try and delete these files, I get an "unexpected error" - I am assuming that basically I do not have permission!

So if anyone else has some suggestions.

I really don't want to have to delete the share and restart.

Log in to your web interface, go to system, then restore/erase and choose restore. Wait for it to finish and then try again.

Tried that - connected as admin to the share - get "operation can't be completed as users does not access to those files"

You should not even need to connect as admin for anything if access restrictions are turned off which they should be after successfully restoring the unit. When does it ask you for a login ? What OS are you using and how are you trying to access the data?

I am usin MAC Lion. If I use "finder" without entering any other credentials - I get connected as guest - and move the firectories to trash, it  then gives me "Operation can't becompleted because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8072)" I think the files were original created after a failed backup from a second buffalo occurred (using the built in backup feature) when it tried to create the directories but failed to copy the contents. (A red symbol apears over the folder symbol when viewed in finder). Hence why I then used ftp - which showed the privilidges assiged as shown in my original post. Neither buffalo has had any other user / groups created - although I did originally rename the system account at one stage - however this shouldn't effect privelidges
