I've just got my Drivestation 1tb HD-CE1.0TU2, I was wondering what drive is inside. I don't want to crack it open! Any software tools that can tell you ? TIA

Nogsx3,

There are many different types of HDD that might be used with these and similar devices, however you could try the following:

1. Hook up the device to your computer (I'm assuming you're running XP SP3 in this case)

2. Double-click "My Computer"

3. Right-click on the icon of the drive letter that your Drivestation is assigned to and choose Properties.

4. A window should come up with 5 tabs on it.  Click on the one that says "Hardware" and this will list all of the HDDs and CD/DVD drives connected to your computer.

From there it should be process of elimination.  Let us know if you run into any snags.

Thanks for the reply. That will list my drives, it reports Buffalo external USB drive. I was after whats inside e.g Seagate, Western Digital etc.... any ideas ? TIA

The main hard drive used is

Model
Brand SAMSUNG
Model HD103UI

Performance
Interface SATA 3.0Gb/s
Capacity 1TB (931gb)
RPM 5400 RPM
Cache 32MB
Average Seek Time 8.9ms
Average Latency 5.52ms

Physical Spec
Form Factor 3.5"

Although many companies advertise it as a 7200rpm its actaully a 5400rpm - but with the cache set at 32mb you will get transfer speed of up to 30mbs

Sometimes disk managment or device manager will say more about the drive it'll say like WDC160 etc or some other abbreviation. This should tell you what type of drive is in there, but we use many different manufacturers, so there's no way to know for sure.

I tend to disagree, if you use the EVEREST software- go to STORAGE/ATA it will give you all the information there, i should also mention that Buffalo doesnt inform of the drive speed, im quite happy with mine (its the 4th station i have had)
